Graduate Research Program on
Climate Change and Human Security
(GRP-CC&HS)
CC&HS GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
The GRP-CCHS will help create human capacity to cope with the threats posed by climate
change and reduce the impact of environmental hazards on communities.
CC&HS SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
The Graduate Research Program on climate change and human security (GRP-CCHS) will
educate ten international students annually so that they can understand the threat and risks
associated with climate change, get familiar with design early warning systems and know
ways and means to improve the coping capacity of populations who are affected. They will be
exposed to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to assessing threats and to work
in multidisciplinary teams with affected groups in harnessing their inherent resilience to
hazards. Upon completion of their study, the students are expected to be able:
- to analyze with scientific tools and methods the threats and risks to society or communities
to the impact of climate change;
- to synthesize knowledge regarding integrated management strategies to climate change,
effects specifically to improve human security;
- to prepare background document and policy notes that offer options to deal with climate
change;
- to assist communities in dealing with climate change by adaptation and mitigation.
1. CC&HS STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
The Graduate Research Program on Climate Change and Human Security (GRP-CCHS) is
opened for students and professionals having a Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) with
(Mention Assez-bien or Second class Upper or equivalent, in relevant disciplines: Geography,
agronomy, Sociology, Environment, Economics, Law, Agriculture and other pertaining
disciplines.
Application Requirements of candidates to the program:
i- Be citizen of one of the ten member country of WASCAL (Benin, Burkina faso, Côte
d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, The Gambia, Senegal, Togo).
ii- Minimum Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) with (Mention Assez-bien or Second
class Upper holder in the above cited discipline).
iii- Letter of motivation.
iv- Provide letter of recommendation from three references.
v- Copy of birth certificate and passport.
vi- Provide all transcripts and copy of diploma.
vii- Provide a Curriculum vitae.

Applicants should show profisciency in English, TOEFL or equivalent, score
of 213.
ix- Francophone candidates must have an intermediate level of English (see Language
section in the application form).
x- If you are in another Graduate program you should not apply for this GRP.
Once a student is given admission by the Advisory Board of the Graduate program,
registration for courses shall be done at the University of Lomé, according to the University's
rules of admission. All rules will be posted at all member universities through WASCAL
contact.
The application form will be available on the member universities websites and at the GRPCC&HS secretariat ( Immeuble CIC, 1st Floor, opposite DAAS, University of Lomé. Deadline
to apply is January 22, 2016.)
*Female candidates are encouraged to apply.
*The program will admit a maximum of 10 students. There shall be equitable distribution of
students across the WASCAL countries (one student per country).
2. CC&HS LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
GRP-CC&HS is an English-speaking graduate program. The following are the language
requirements:
 Basic Certificate in English Language;
 Functional Certificate in English Language;
A three-month intensive English language training course will be offered at the University of
Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana, for the selected francophone students before courses start.
At the end of this English language course, students will have to pass an English language
proficiency test e.g. TOEFL
English speaking students will also read French language while at CIREL, Village du Bénin.
3. CC&HS SCHOLARSHIP AND RESEARCH SUPPORT
The scholarship and research support will normally be provided following the criteria below:
 Students after admission will be required to maintain a graduate level Grade Point
Average (GPA) of B or a minimum of B from the course;
 During the course curriculum phase, students will be required to develop a detailed
research program, including budget;
 During the project/research stage, students are expected to present their progress
reports regularly and be evaluated accordingly.
Research funds will also be made available to students after approval of their research budget
by their advisor/supervisor and by WASCAL as well as their stipend.

-Earth and ocean sciences & research methodology
-Geomorphology
-Disaster and Human Contingency
-Societal dimension and research methodology
-Climate change and economics
-Research methodology
-Human and environment
- Sustainable development
 Research Plan Preparation: during the course-curriculum phase.
 Field Work: The field work can be done in or outside Togo depending on expertise
(supervisor), availability of equipment and accessibility to relevant data.
 Final Write up and defense: The edition of the final report of the thesis will be done at
the university of Lomé. The defense of the thesis will be done as well at the university
of Lomé.

6. PUBLICATION OF THE SELECTION OUTCOME
University of Lomé in collaboration with the GRP-CC&HS Advisory Board will short list
candidates. One candidate will be selected per country. The selected candidate will be
interviewed. The selection interview is mandatory to support the final selection of candidates.
Successful candidates will then submit a hardcopy of the application package.
