History of the Miletus
Miletus is an ancient Greek city
on the Western coast of
Anatolia, near the mouth of
River Maeander.
Named Miletus after a place in Crete.
The ruins are located
near the modern town of
Balat in Aydin province,
Turkey.
Legend has it that an influx of Cretans
occurred displacing the indigenous
Leleges.
The Carians arrived here in the late
Bronze Age, 13th Century BC, and the
Greeks arrived later that century.
Evidence of first
settlement is inaccessible
due to the rise in sea level
and deposition of
sediments from the
Maeander.
Considered the greatest Greek
metropolis with 90 colonies.
Was the wealthiest Greece city before
the Persian invasion in the mid 6th
century BC.
The city rebelled against the
Hittite Empire and was destroyed
after the empire fall in the 12th
century BC.
Starting 1000 BC the city was
resettled extensively by the Ionic
Greeks.
