Ecosystems Project- Save your Species!
As an ecologist, you have explored much of the world. While on one of your expeditions, you stumbled
across a species that you have never seen before!
A
Purpose: In order to protect this species, you must create a PowerPoint presentation that will convince
other ecologists and the government that this species must be saved.
 Part 1 (10 points)
Due Date__________________
My species is called: ____________________________________________________
Species Description:
Write your name in the blank if you are responsible for that part of the project.
 __________Describe what your species look like: (5 points)
 Legs
 Size
 Arms
 Shape
 Eyes
 Color
 __________Hand draw and color your species using Microsoft Paint. (5 points)
 Part 2 (35 points)
Due Date__________________
Ecosystem:
Goal: Describe the ecosystem where your species live within the ocean.
 __________Describe abiotic and biotic features that can be found within the ecosystem.
 Biotic: animals, plants (living organisms) (3 points)
 Abiotic: temperature, climate, soil (non-living) (3 points)
 Describe how your species interacts with some of the biotic and abiotic features.
For example: It eats worms, lives in a tree, and it breathes oxygen. (5 points)
 __________Make 1 colored drawing (10 points) of your species’ habitat/ecosystem (You
may draw your species in the diagram along with other ocean animals. You may cut and paste
pictures from the internet. Don’t forget to cite your sources/where you got them from.) and include
the following:
 Draw and Label the ocean floor features in your habitat drawing IF they are found or
seen in your drawing.
 Continental shelf
 Abyssal plain
 Hydrothermal Vents
 Continental Rise
 Seamounts
 Trenches
 Volcanoes
 Mid Ocean Ridge
 __________In what ocean light zone (photic, aphotic) does your species live? ( 5 points)
 Define what photic and aphotic means on a slide.
 Why does your species live in this ocean light zone?
 Label the light zone (photic, aphotic) where your species lives in your drawing.
 How much oxygen and salt is in the zone where your species lives? (6 points)
 Does anything happen to oxygen and salinity as you go deeper into the ocean?
 In what ocean marine life zone (intertidal, neritic, oceanic, benthic) does your species
live? (3 points)
 Define the zone(s) where your species lives. Ex: What does intertidal mean?
 Why does your species live in this ocean marine life zone(s)?
 Label the ocean marine life zone(s) that your species lives in your drawing.
 Part 3 (20 points)
Due Date__________________
Limiting Factors
Goal: Describe the limiting factors that are causing your species to go extinct. A limiting factor is a problem
that causes the population of the species to decrease.
 Why is this species going extinct? (1 points)
 Why should we save this species? (1 points)
 __________Density-Dependent limiting factors: (9 points)
 Competition: Competition can occur between members of different species. This type of
competition can lead to evolutionary change. Over time, the species may evolve to occupy
different places. What other species does your species compete with for resources (food,
water, shelter, space)?
 Predation: Populations in nature are often controlled by predation. The regulation of a
population by predation takes place within a predator-prey relationship, one of the bestknown mechanisms of population control. What are its predators? What eats your species?
 Parasitism: Parasites can limit the growth of a population. A parasite lives in or on another
organism (the host) and consequently harms it. What species is a parasite and harms yours?
 __________Density-Independent limiting factors: (9 points)
 Unusual Weather or Natural Disasters: What do they do to the population size of your
species? How does your species react to them?
 Diseases: What diseases harm it?
 Human Activities: Such as damming or pollution, etc. How do they affect the population
size of your species? How does your species react to human activities?
 Part 4 (20 points)
Due Date__________________
Food Web
 __________Draw a food web for your species using Microsoft Paint. (10 points) You may cut and
paste pictures from the internet. Don’t forget to cite your sources/where you got them from.
 Label the producers, consumers and decomposers. (3 points)
 Label the primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers as well in the food web. (3 points)
 Make sure that your arrows show the direction of energy flow (3 points)
 __________Explain how energy is recycled in your food web. (1 points)
 Part 5 (15 points)
Due Date__________________
Energy Transfer
 Draw an energy pyramid for your species (5 points)
 What happens to the energy as you go up the pyramid?
 Draw a number pyramid for your species (5 points)
 Draw a biomass pyramid for your species (5 points)
 Part 6 (15 points)
Nutrients
Due Date__________________
Goal: Explain how the following nutrients cycle through your ecosystem and how your organism contributes
to that cycling:
 Nitrogen Cycle (5 points)
 Carbon Cycle (5 points)
 Water (5 points)
 Part 7 (10 points)
Due Date__________________
Interactions
Goal: Explain how your organism interacts with other organisms in your ecosystem
 Mutualism (5 points)
 Coexistence/Cooperative (5 points)
Total Points Possible: 125
Total Points Earned:___________
Grade: ________
