The British saw the USA as a fastgrowing economic rival and they weren’t upset that it was divided. The French influence in Mexico and it would suit them if they were seceded. The Confederates sent troops to London and Paris, to lobby for official recognition. http://www.charlestonbatterytour.com/fort-sumter-fire.jpg Fort Sumter On April 12th, 1861 General Beauregard ordered attack on Fort Sumter. The battle lasted two days without causalities. Major Anderson surrendered on April 14th. Confederate General: General Beauregard. Union General: Major Anderson Significance: It was the start of the Civil War http://www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/civil-war/1861/august/bull-run-battle.jpg Battle at Bull Run On July 21st, 1861 was the Battle of Bull Run. The Union army was under command by Brigadier General Irvin McDowell. The Union hoped to capture Confederate’s capital of Richmond, Virginia. Brigadier General Beauregard commanded the Confederate army. Colonel Jackson held the Confederate ground against Union forces allowing Beauregard’s troops to gather reinforcement. Counterattack at Bull Run Confederate troops had fresh supplies and ammunition and forced the Union to run. The Union ran to the north Washington, DC. Both sides realized there were two impacts of this war. A lot of causalities and it will keep going. http://www.clccharter.org/elana1/Bull%20Run/Second_Battle_of_Bull_Run.jpg Battle at Gettysburg On July 1st , 1863 Major General George Meade led his army (Union) of the Potomac fend off Confederate troops invading north. General Robert E. Lee was moving his troops (Confederate) towards Philadelphia killing any Union troops along the way. Battle at Gettysburg The battle lasted three days. Union had 93,921 troops while Confederate had 71,699 troops. On the first day, Confederate troops sent Union troops running. On the second day, even though Confederate was attacking hard, the Union was fighting back. On the third day, 12,500 Confederate troops charged Union troops on Cemetery Ridge. Union troops actually managed to fight back with amazing rifle and artillery fire. http://thor.he.net/~gludlow/rip.gif Causalities • o o o Union 3,155 killed 14,531 injured 5,369 captured/killed • o o o Confederate 4,708 killed 12,293 injured 5,830 captured/missing •Signifigance: huge number of war casualties in the American Civil War, and was the climax of the whole war effort. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.civilwar.org/assets/images/battlefieldhubs/battlefie ldtitle/fort-fisher-battlefield.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/fortfisher.html&usg=__ziyp8j4A0PaEkt3iqsYUi7wZ4t8=&h=225&w=731&sz=88&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbni d=TuXog95C:4,s:0 2nd Battle at Fort Fisher • Major General Alfred Terry commanded 9,000 Union troops. The south seceded, but we wouldn’t be the United States of America. There would be a United States and the Confederate States of America. Slavery would most likely not be around now, however it would’ve carried on past 1865.
