2. Identify the dominant topographical feature of the
Greek [Balkan] Peninsula.
It was about three-fourths of ancient Greece were uneven
mountains. And the mountains divided the area into many
different regions. The mountain went along the Balkan
Peninsula from northwest to southeast.
3. What types of climate and agricultural cultivation is
found in the Aegean region?
The climate was various with moderate temperatures in the
ancient Aegean region. The temperature was about 48 degrees
Fahrenheit in the winter and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the
summer. Most of the lands did not support farming because
the lands were lack of fertile soil and fresh water. Also the
irrigation was not good as other ancient civilizations. And the
small valley only covered one-fourth of Greece although it had
some good soil.
4. What advantages and disadvantages does the geography
pose for the ancient Greek peoples?
The ancient Greece was a good place for seaborne because of
its geographical location and it was also suitable for trading
and commercial work. The good climate brought people an
outdoor life as well. Men used their free time on outdoor public
events. But the ancient Greece was not a good place for
farming and irrigation because of it was lack of fertile soil,
fresh water, and natural resources, such as timber, metals, and
farmland. Also the uneven lands made Greece difficult to
travel so the population of Greece was small and people had to
find new life in other places.
5. From your knowledge of ancient civilizations, how did the
areas settled by the Greeks differ from the early
settlements of the Fertile Crescent region, the Nile River
Valley, the Indus River Valley, and ancient China?
From the ancient civilizations that I learnt before, they were
all good for farming, and went along the rivers with fertile soil,
fresh water, and a lot of natural resources. But there were
only 20% lands were good for farming in the ancient Greece.
And most of the ancient civilizations that I learnt before had
large populations but the ancient Greece didn’t support a good
farmland so it had a small population.
6. List the ways that geography and climate shaped Greek
life and possibly Greek history?
-Food: grapes, grains, olives
-Fewer natural resources
-Multi-communities
-Most of citizens lived in the valley
-Outdoor public events: discuss public issues, news, some
activities
-People wanted to find new life in the other places
-Sea travel, skilled sailors
-Difficult to unite the ancient Greece under one government
