4. Written assignment and speech
Divide the class into three groups (a, b and c), who then subdivide into groups of three or four:
A: You are an environmentalist who has been asked to give a speech at a conservationist “Friends
of the Earth” meeting. Your topic is the ways in which man is interfering with and destroying the
environment. Write the opening of your speech and be prepared to give it in front of the class.
B: You are an environmentalist who has been asked to give a speech at a meeting for right-wing
Conservative businessmen who do not believe that climate change is a result of man’s interference
with nature. Write the opening of your speech on why climate change is a result of man’s
interference with nature and be prepared to give it in front of the class.
C: You are a writer of children’s books who has been asked to write a book for children about
climate change. Write the opening chapter of your book and be prepared to read it aloud to the
class.
