Line---A thin mark on a surface created by a pen, pencil or brush. Line Quality---A special character of any line, such as thick or thin, smooth or rough, continuous or broken. Vertical Line---In an artwork, the line that runs up and down, such as a flagpole, or a giant red-wood tree. Horizontal Line---In an artwork, the line representing the horizon. Diagonal Line---A slanted edge or line. Zig Zag Lines---A series of diagonal lines moving in different directions (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal) that come together at sharp edges. Curve Lines---Line that changes directions gradually, expressing movement in a graceful way, such as circles and spirals. Actual lines---Lines that are real and can be seen. Implied Lines---Lines that are not real, but implied by placement of other lines, shapes, and colors. Sketch---A quick drawing. Sketch Book---A book or pad of blank paper use for drawing and keeping sketches. Technique Sheet---A reference tool showing each element of art and principal of design. Contours---The edges of an object Shape---A flat, two dimensional area with height, and width, which might have an edge, or outline, around it. Geometric Shapes---Shapes that are precise and mathematical. Circles, squares, triangles and ovals, and rectangles. Organic Shapes--- “Free Form” Shapes that are irregular, and uneven, such as leaves, flowers and clouds. View Finder---A device used by an artist to show the area of a composition. Detail---A small part of a large artwork. Contour Drawing---A drawing technique in which artists draw contours, or edges of an object. Gesture Drawing---A drawing technique in which artists move a drawing medium, such as pencil, quickly and freely, over a surface to capture the form and actions of a subject.
