Batra Hospital and Medical Research makes early detection of
breast cancer a reality for women through installation of 50
Micron 3D Mammography machine.
Fujifilm’s advanced tomosynthesis technology reveals the internal structure of the breast thus
simplifying the detection of lesions that gets overlooked in a routine mammography.
New Delhi, 25 July 2015: Delhi women will have access to a new, highly advanced breast cancer
diagnostic machine, now that latest 50 Micron 3D Mammography machine has been installed at Batra
Hospital and Medical Research. Fujifilm, a global leader in the development and application of
imaging and information innovations to healthcare technologies, has provided Batra Hospital &
Medical Research Centre in New Delhi, their state of the art mammography machine, Amulet
Innovality.
Late diagnosis reduce the chances of survival yet more than 92 percent of breast cancers in Indian
women are diagnosed at stage II or later. “If found and treated early, the 10 year survival rate for
breast cancer is greater than 90 percent, making it imperative for healthcare providers to step up and
provide women the best screening devices,” says Dr. Pavan Gurha, Head, Department of
Anaesthesiology & Critical Care and Chairman Purchase Committee at Batra Hospital, New Delhi.
Early detection is even more imperative today, considering the decline in the age of women developing
breast cancer in the country. Data from the National Cancer Registry programme shows that females
in their 30s and 40s fall prone to the disease. 1 out of 2 Indian women diagnosed with breast cancer
faces the prospect of death. Nearly 50% of the 144,937 women detected with the disease in 2012
succumbed to the disease, according to the Globocan project.
In India cancer of the breast is the most common cancer among women especially in Metropolitan
cities like Delhi. Lifestyle factors may be responsible for increase in the incidence in urban population
especially in younger generation. This incidence is likely to increase. Breast cancer in Young women is
more aggressive.
“Majority of breast cancer are diagnosed at a relatively advanced stage owing to lack of awareness and
absence of effective breast cancer screening program. Health education, early diagnosis and advanced
facilities for screening & treatment are needed to improve breast cancer care in India” said Dr. G.P.
Vashist, Director Radiology & Imaging Batra Hospital & Medical Research Centre, New Delhi.
Amulet Innovality uses advanced tomosynthesis technology to enable the conversion of digital breast
images into a 3-D reconstruction of the breast, in contrast to the flat images produced by traditional 2D digital mammography. Reconstructed tomographic images reveal the internal structure of the
breast, simplifying the detection of lesions that may be overlooked in a routine mammography.
Amulet Innovality enables diagnosticians to obtain a clearer view of the breast tissue, facilitating
identification of early stage breast cancer and reducing the need for additional tests and biopsies.
“At Fujifilm, we are continuously innovating, creating new technologies, product and services and
AMULET INNOVALITY is one such product which helps in early detection of cancer,” says Mr.
Yasunobu Nishiyama, Managing Director Fujifilm India.
Several features of Amulet Innovality offer women a safe and personalised screening experience,
making it easier for them to come for breast examinations. This unique system caters to the unique
biological makeup of every woman: The Intelligent Automatic Exposure Control (i-AEC) defines the
optimum X ray dosage for each breast type, compared to conventional AEC where the sensor position
is fixed. A Direct Conversion flat panel detector with a 50 micron pixel resolution, and other advanced
technological features also give this system a distinct edge over others. 50 micron resolution is best
resolution and it helps detects cancer at a very early stage.
“This advanced diagnostic system is in line with Fujifilm’s commitment to the pink ribbon campaign,
established to raise awareness and promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer,” says Mr.
Chander Shekhar Sibal, Executive Vice President & Head of Medical Division at Fujifilm India.
Mammography is the most powerful breast cancer detection tool. Mammograms don't prevent breast
cancer but they can save lives by finding breast cancers as early as possible. Mammograms have been
shown to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer by 30 percent in women over the age of 50 by
early detection.
Modern day digital mammography machine and tomosynthesis pick cancers early and involve only
tiny radiation even less than a standard chest X ray. In future it is expected digital mammography will
become more and more common. Most oncologists agree that breast screening mammography should
start at the age of 40 and earlier in patients with high risks like genetic predisposition (BRCA 1 &
BRCA 2 antigen positive) and those with strong family history.
Mr A.L. Batra –President, Batra Hospital & Medical Research Centre and Mr Yasunobu NishiyamaManaging Director, Fujifilm India have agreed to enter into MOU for making Batra Hospital center of
excellence for showcasing latest technologies and Training of Doctors, Healthcare workers and
Students in Batra Hospital for wide range of Fujifilm products.

The system installed at Batra Hospital has several features that set it apart from other digital
mammography systems: Tomosynthesis, HCP*, ISC**, and 7 kW High Frequency Generator.
A Direct conversion flat panel detector made of amorphous selenium, with 50 micron pixel
resolution, and other advanced technological features that guarantee the sharpest images.
Dual mode tomosynthesis- standard and high resolution enables the examination of fine
tissue layers and assessment of clusters of calcification.
A stereotactic biopsy unit kit with dedicated software enables a precise and efficient biopsy
examination with detailed images on high resolution monitors display.
