Multiplying Mixed Numbers
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number has two parts. A whole number and a
fraction.
What is an Improper Fraction? An Improper Fraction is a fraction which Numerator is
greater than its Denominator.
How do I change a Mixed
To get the Numerator: Start with the Denominator.

Practice 1: Change to an
4 7/10
Improper Fraction.
Answer: 10 x 4 + 7 = 47/10
Practice 2:
5 3/7
How do I change an Improper
fraction to a Mixed Number?
Answer: 7 x 5 + 3 = 38/7
Divide the Denominator into the Numerator to get the
whole number and the remainder is the numerator and
keep the same denominator.

Example:
1 ¼ x 2/3
48  5 = 9 4/5
12/5
Answer: 12  5 = 2 2/5
14/8
Answer: 14  8 = 1 6/14
Simplify: 1 3/7
Step 1: Change the mixed numbers to improper
fractions.
2: Cross reduce using the GCF of the
diagonal numbers.
3: Multiply the Numerators.
4: Multiply the Denominators.
5: Write the answer as a mixed number.
NEVER MULTIPLY THE WHOLE NUMBERS AND
THE FRACTIONS! Always change it to an improper
fraction.
1 ¼ x 2/3
Step 1: 1 ¼ = 5/4 x 2/3
