Matthew Wilson Lesson Plan Lesson 1 of 3 Unit- Culture –Greek Mythology Lesson Title- Introduction to Greek Characters and Mask Making Time – 80mins Grade Level –6th Objectives/Outcomes- Students will be able toLearn information and terms about Greek Mythology, Greek history, and geography and culture of Ancient Greece. Complete a guided graphic organizer where they must choose a Greek Character and symbols to use in their mask design Learn art material Plaster wrap and create a plaster mask NYS ART Standard- (1) Create, Perform, and Participate in the Arts (3) Respond to and Analyze Works of Art (4)- Understand Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of Art Social Studies StandardProcedure0-5mins 1) Anticipatory Set- Greet students. Take Attendance. Student’s daily sketchbook assignment in their workbooks (see daily routine sheet for explanation). Have students prepare for notes 5-8mins 2) Input- Gauge how much they know about Greek Mythology. Expect them to name a few of the gods. Ask them how many of them have heard of these stories from their history class. Explain that different cultures believe different things and this can all depend on the time period too. Pass out worksheets 8-10mins 3) Modeling- Guide them through how to use the Greek character graphic organizer (see attached). Tell them to make sure they are picking multiple choices and understand what a symbol is. 10-11mins 4) Understanding- Ask if there are any questions about the organizer. Answer accordingly. 11-30mins 5) Modeling- Guide students through Greek Mythology powerpoint (see attached). REMINDER- Tell students that you are not expecting them to necessarily agree with every thing. They are simply studying the characters to gain an understanding of the culture and artistic designing. 11-30mins 6) Practice- Have students circle Greek Characters they like on the organizer as you go through slideshow. Outline specific slides that correlate with the worksheet. Special attention to modifications outlined. Work or have aids work with special need students if necessary. 30-40mins 7) Modeling- Guide them through how to make a plaster wrap masks. Go over proper set up with plastic. Write name on back of masks so they do not get taken or lost. Spend time cutting plaster wrap into small strips. Show them how to activate the chemical by using water and then how to apply it on. It is important to go over the three-layer rule as well as the strong around the sides. Also let them know if they have strips that go over the mold it doesn’t matter as they will be cut to size. 30-40mins 8) Understanding- Ask if there are any questions about how to use it and then allow them to start setting up. 40-70mins 9) Practice- Monitor that students are correctly creating masks. Do not allow them to finish unless they show the finished masks to me 70-80mins 10) Clean-up- Put worksheets in folder. Clear tables and put away supplies. Chairs pushed in. Vocabulary- Greek, Mythology, Symbolism, Symbols, Various Mythological Characters Materials- Graphic Organizer. Computer. Smartboard projector, scissors, plastic table covers, plaster-wrap, buckets, water, Interdisciplinary ElementsHistory and Geography- Greece. Common Core Elements WHST 6-8.2 Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic. Assessment- Student has learned information and terms about Greek Mythology, Greek history, and geography and culture of Greece.
