As part of our Chemistry unit, you will create and share a model of an element atom. A report written as an element block will accompany the model. You will have class time to work on this, but the project will involve work at home. I will give you the rubric that will be used to grade this project. As always, I expect you to do your best work. I have high expectations for you, and I expect you to show this in your work. Atom Model: You will be assigned an element in class. Your model is to show the correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Electrons will be displayed in the correct shell configuration. I should be able to distinguish between each of the subatomic particles (they will each look different). Please make sure that they are secure on your model and will not fall off. It is your responsibility to make sure that everything stays in place until I am able to grade it. You must also identify the element and tell the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in it. The due date for your project will be _____________________________. You will share your project with the class. Atom Element Block: You must also design an element block to accompany your model. Your element block should be made on a piece of plain, white paper. I will provide paper and give you access to the markers, scissors, colored pencils, and crayons in class. This block may be created on the computer or created by you. Your block should include the following information: _______ Element name _______ Element symbol _______ Atomic number and atomic mass _______ Number of protons, neutrons, and electrons _______ Melting and boiling point (Celsius) _______ Origin of name _______ Discovery information _______ At least five interesting facts that may include important uses, interesting facts, common compounds, etc. _______ At least two pictures illustrating the element. They cannot be random drawings on the paper. The information may be included on the element block in any way you choose, but it should be colorful and neat. You may even cut out pictures from magazines. The website below is available for you to use in your search for information. It is one web address with links to five different pages. http://fur.ly/1u6a Your atom model will be graded using this rubric: Element name ______/5 Protons ______/15 Neutrons ______/15 Electrons ______/15 Shell Configuration ______/15 Neatness/Appearance ______/10 Completed by due date ______/10 Oral presentation ______/15 __________ total Your element block will be graded using this rubric: Element name ______/5 Element symbol ______/5 Atomic number and mass ______/10 Number of protons/neutrons/electrons ______/15 Melting/boiling points ______/10 Origin of name ______/10 Discovery information ______/10 Five interesting facts ______/15 Two pictures ______/10 Completed by due date ______/10 ________total
