ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
ABOUT THE COURSE
William V. Giannobile, DDS, MS, DMSc
It is clear that the major dental disease of the next
decade will be periodontitis as it affects the aging
population. We are living longer with more chronic
disease, and taking more medications than ever.
What are the implications for dentistry and how can
we help patients live healthier, happier lives?
Dr. Giannobile is the Najjar Endowed
Professor of Dentistry and Biomedical
Engineering, Director of the Michigan
Center for Oral Health Research
and Chair of the Department of
Periodontics and Oral Medicine
at the University of Michigan
School of Dentistry. He received his DDS and an MS in
Oral Biology from the University of Missouri. He later
received his certificate in Periodontology and Doctor of
Medical Science in Oral Biology from Harvard University.
He subsequently completed postdoctoral training in
Molecular Biology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and
Harvard Medical School.
This presentation will take the latest findings
regarding population characteristics, possible
systemic links, risk assessment and periodontal
diagnostics to form a comprehensive periodontal
treatment regime for the general dentist and
hygienist. How can we take an evidence-based
approach to maximize our outcomes for the patients
who would benefit by partnering with a periodontist
early in the diagnosis? We will explore how current
evidence is used to manage real cases, illustrating
how to communicate with the patient, what options for assessment are available and treatment options chosen.
Dr. Giannobile previously served as a faculty member
at Harvard and Forsyth Institute in Boston. He is an
Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research, is on
the editorial boards of multiple journals, and is a fellow
of the American College of Dentists and a Diplomate of
the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Giannobile
currently serves as president of the American Academy of
Periodontology Foundation.
George W. Taylor, DMD, MPH, DrPH
Dr. Taylor is Chair, Department of
Preventive and Restorative Dental
Sciences, and Leland A. and Gladys
K. Barber Distinguished Professor in
Dentistry at the University of California
San Francisco School of Dentistry. Dr.
Taylor is Immediate Past President of
the American Board of Dental Public Health and a member
of the NIDCR Board of Scientific Counselors.
Kenneth S. Kornman, DDS, PhD
Dr. Kornman is the Chief Scientific
Officer of Interleukin Genetics. He
is actively involved in the clinical
application of new knowledge in
multiple common diseases of aging
and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal
of Periodontology and Co-Editor of
Clinical Advances in Periodontics. He currently retains
an academic appointment at Harvard and the University
of Michigan, and is on the Board of Visitors of Duke
University’s Graduate School. Dr. Kornman holds twenty
U.S. patents; has co-authored three textbooks, and has
published more than 125 peer-reviewed manuscripts,
including papers in Science, the New England Journal of
Medicine, and Human Genetics.
Donald S. Clem III, DDS
Dr. Donald S. Clem received his
certificate in Periodontics from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is a Diplomate of the
American Board of Periodontology and the recipient of numerous awards including recognition for
Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Periodontics by the California Society of Periodontists and co-recipient
of the Clinical Research Award by the American Academy
of Periodontology.
Dr. Clem is currently in full-time practice in the fields of
periodontics and dental implants in Fullerton, California.
In 2011, he served as President for the American Academy
