ABOUT THE SPEAKERS ABOUT THE COURSE William V. Giannobile, DDS, MS, DMSc It is clear that the major dental disease of the next decade will be periodontitis as it affects the aging population. We are living longer with more chronic disease, and taking more medications than ever. What are the implications for dentistry and how can we help patients live healthier, happier lives? Dr. Giannobile is the Najjar Endowed Professor of Dentistry and Biomedical Engineering, Director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He received his DDS and an MS in Oral Biology from the University of Missouri. He later received his certificate in Periodontology and Doctor of Medical Science in Oral Biology from Harvard University. He subsequently completed postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. This presentation will take the latest findings regarding population characteristics, possible systemic links, risk assessment and periodontal diagnostics to form a comprehensive periodontal treatment regime for the general dentist and hygienist. How can we take an evidence-based approach to maximize our outcomes for the patients who would benefit by partnering with a periodontist early in the diagnosis? We will explore how current evidence is used to manage real cases, illustrating how to communicate with the patient, what options for assessment are available and treatment options chosen. Dr. Giannobile previously served as a faculty member at Harvard and Forsyth Institute in Boston. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research, is on the editorial boards of multiple journals, and is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
