Dissertation Topic: Application of database development lifecycle in automating a dispensing chemist (case study) Project Abstract An organization data is a valuable resource that should be safeguarded and managed in an efficient manner. Such management should involve procedures that make it possible to store, retrieve, alter and retain integrity of data. For this reasons, many organizations have invested significantly in development of information management systems that aid their daily transactions. In addition, some businesses such as pharmaceutical outlets are required by law and the pharmaceutical ethics and code of conduct to keep safely and securely the clients’ information. Cabinet filling system cannot meet these requirements hence the need for organizations to adopt electronic databases. Unfortunately, many organizations spend colossal amounts of money only to have poorly developed systems that hardly meet their requirements. This is as a result of lack of a careful approach in development process. A research into the area of database system development lifecycle has been reviewed. Issues that arise in each phase of development process have been analyzed from varied authors’ point of views. Methods, techniques and tools such as structured system analysis design methodology (SSADM), CASE tools, interviews, questionnaires etc, appropriate for each stage of development are reviewed. A background of our client and the challenges he faces with paper-based information storage are mentioned. Oracle software and structured query language are briefly reviewed and used to develop a database system for our case study – Kisukioni Dispensing Chemist. Essential security measures for relational database systems are reviewed as part of physical design. Evidently, security risks emanate from within the organization and access to data should be limited to what is necessary to carry-out tasks for each user. 3 Undergraduate Name of University: Egerton University Degree Course: Bachelor of Education (arts) Qualifications: First class Honours Degree Period at University: September1996 to December 2000 Secondary School School attended: Kangundo High School Period: 1991- 1994 Attained a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Primary School School: Matithini Primary School Year: 1983-1990 Attained a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Certificate Work Experience Currently Fellow – UNITID Health Informatics Track October 2011 – November 2011 Laikipia University College (Constituent College of Egerton University) Position: Senior Administrative Assistant, Office of the Principal.
