Grade: 4
Grade-Level Domain MAP
Core Knowledge Content
State Standards
Science – The Respiratory System
Science 7.2.2.c: Gather, analyze, and interpret data
and models on the functions and interactions of the
human body.
Process of taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon
dioxide
Science 7.2.2.b: Develop, communicate, and justify an
evidence-based scientific explanation regarding the
functions and interactions of the human body
Total Body Makeover (This whole body diagram
includes circulatory and respiratory systems.)
Nose, throat, voice box, trachea (windpipe)
Lungs, bronchi, bronchial tubes, diaphragm, ribs,
Science 5.2.2.d: Create and evaluate models of human
body systems and organs
alveoli (air sacs)
Smoking: damage to lung tissue, lung cancer
Science 5.2.2.e: Compare and contrast a human
system to that of another organism, and provide
hypotheses about why the similarities and differences
exist
Prior Knowledge
What Students Will Learn In Future Grades
Kindergarten: the five senses and associated body
parts; taking care of your body with exercise,
cleanliness, healthy foods, and rest
Grade 5: Changes in the body during adolescence
(puberty); endocrine system; reproductive system
Grade 1: Body Systems ~ skeletal, muscular, digestive,
circulatory, excretory, and nervous; germs, diseases,
and preventing illness
Grade 2: All living things are made of cells; the
digestive and excretory systems; taking care of the body
with a healthy diet
Grade 3: Muscular system, skeletal system, nervous
system, vision, and hearing
Cross-Curricular Links
Review of circulatory system to connect to how the red blood cells to connect to how the red blood cells gather oxygen to
transport to the cells throughout the body.
Domain Vocabulary
Systemic Circulation: When oxygenated blood is carried from the heart to the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the
heart.
Pulmonary Circulation: When blood circulates through the lungs to pick up oxygen and is returned to the heart through veins.
Alveoli: the air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide takes place
Bronchi: two small tubes that deliver air to the lungs
Capillary: a tiny blood vessel
Corpuscle: an unattached body cell
Diaphragm: a thin sheet of muscle just below the lungs (breathing always starts with the diaphragm)
Larynx: also called the voice box, a part of the body that holds the vocal cords.

Science: The Human Body ~ Respiratory System
Grade: 4
Lungs: two pink, fleshy organs beneath the rib cage
Oxygen: colorless, odorless gas that is breathed in and is essential for cell function in the human body
Ribs: bones that curve around the torso from the back to the chest and surround and protect the heart and lungs
Throat: the part of the digestive system that connects the mouth and the exophagus
Trachea: also called the windpipe, a part of the body that brings air to the lungs
Inhale: When the diaphragm contracts, it flattens and forces the chest muscles to pull the ribs upward and outward, making
the chest cavity expand and full the lungs with air.
Exhale: When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves upwards and causes the ribs to move inward and downward and make the
chest cavity small so it forces the air out of the lungs.
