Investigation 4-5
1. What is heat? Heat is the motion of molecules
2. What is Mass? Mass is the amount of matter in an object
3. What is volume? Volume is the amount of space an object takes up
4. Why was the salt solution in class able to layer? The amount of salt dissolved in water
determined the density of the solution. The denser the solution, the “heavier” the solution.
Heavy solutions sink. Light solutions float on heavier solutions.
5. Solve D=M/V 55g 40ml
66g 50ml
6. How does temperature affect density? If water is cold it is denser than warm water. Warm
water being less dense will layer on top of denser cold water.
7. Explain convection and how it plays a part in global weather. Be sure to include information
about the role of the sun, how heat is transferred, what happens as a result of heat transfer, and
how density is affected.- * radiant energy from the sun is absorbed by earth’s surface, land and
water. Land and water heat up (kinetic energy). Energy is transferred from earth’s surface to air
molecules by conduction and by reradiated energy. Air warms, expands, and becomes less
dense. Warm air rises. It cools as it rises, condenses, and gets denser again. The cooled air
descends back to earth. The air is heated again by conduction and radiation, it rises, starting
the convection cycle again. This large convection cell, which circles the planet, carries water
vapor high into the atmosphere. It condenses as clouds hundreds of miles away, providing
precipitation (storms) in other parts of the planet.
8. Draw and label this convection process
