Convection Currents
Wind is caused by uneven heating.
The sun warms the earth,
The warm earth heats the air.
The air temperature increases and rises.
Cool air comes in to take its place,
Again, warm earth heats the air,
It rises
Cool air comes in to take its place,
This transfer of heat causes changes in weather.
And winds develop.
Convection currents are formed by the
upward movement of warm air and the
downward movement of cool air
due to differences in density and temperature
Convection is heat transfer.
Wind is an example of convection
Land breezes and sea breezes happen
because of the uneven heating and cooling of land and water.
Land heats up faster than water.
Air over land becomes warmer, than air over water.
Warm air expands and rises and creates a low pressure area.
Cool air blows inland from the water
Moves under the warm air and lifts it
Flow of air from a body of water to the land is a sea breeze
At night, land cools faster than the water
so the air over the water is warmer than the air over the land.
Warm air over the water rises,
cooler air moves in from the land to take its place.
Air from land to a body of water is called a land breeze.
Convection cells are called storm cells.
Several storm cells in a row are called a squall line.
This is visible on radar as precipitation.
A front forms along the boundary between 2 air masses
with different temperatures, pressures and humidity levels.
Thunderstorms are part of the earth’s natural cooling system.
Thunderstorms move heat from the earth’s surface to high altitudes.
Thunderstorms clean the air.
Thunderstorms bring moisture to dry land.
Tornadoes form from strong convection currents over land.
