ASTRO-DIAGNOSIS OF THALASSAEMIA DISEASE Amitabha Roy 162/B/360 Lake Gardens, Kolkata - 700045 Ph 2417-8153/6711 Mobile: 9331074667 INTRODUCTION Thalassaemia is a hereditary, dreadful, blood-borne genetic disorder passed down from parents to child through genes. There is not any known cause of Thalassaemia except that it is inherited through genes. The thalassaemic child inherits the disorder from both the parents with distinct genetic abnormalities in their red cells. Therefore, both the parents should be thalassaemic and not merely the carriers. For each pregnancy, 25% will be thalassaemic, 50% will be carriers and remaining 25% will be perfectly normal, that is, non thalassaemic. It is a non-curable disorder and need continuous blood transfusion with supportive treatment. The global summary statistics indicate that at least 4.5% of the world population carry a Haemoglobinopathy trait and in India 9-11 % are carriers of the same disease. Alarmed by the rising graph of infant deaths due to thalassaemia, awareness campaign is on the cards for making the blood tests of the couples mandatory before the marriage. Medical astrology is a special branch of astrology which deals with diseases caused under various planetary conditions/influences, its diagnosis, duration and time of onset of the disease and its remedial measures. Just as the modern day doctors, besides relying on sophisticated instruments and pathological analysis, are expected to make use of astrology and its relation to diseases, an astrologer should have adequate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and pathology to arrive at the precise prediction. From the point of view of an astrologer, diseases may be classed under three main categories- 1) inherited or congenital disorder (from the examination of 1st, 6th, 8th and 9th houses); 2) acquired after the birth of a native (6th house); 3) professional (10th and 6th houses). For an astrologer, the congenital or hereditary disease such as thalassaemia is a virgin area and for its fatal nature requires a special study of the planetary influences/conditions prevailing at the time of birth of a child combined with the diagnosis and treatment of the disease from the point of view of medical science. CLINICAL APPROACH The blood is a liquid connective tissue comprising 55% plasma and 45% corpuscles (RBC, WBC and platelets). The red cells or RBC carry oxygen in the form of protein called haemoglobin, a respiratory pigment which also imparts red colour to the blood. The red cells carry oxygen from lungs to heart and from there pumped to distant parts of the body through innumerable arteries. Reversely, the red cells remove the excess carbon dioxide arising from respiration and pumped into lungs via heart through veins and capillaries. During the first eight weeks of pregnancy, red blood Cells or RBC are born in the embryo/foetus in the yolk sac within mother's womb. For the next five months, spleen and thymus gland of the embryo take control of the blood forming process. After the birth of a child RBC is formed in red bone marrow and continues upto nearly 20 years, after which RBC is formed only in the hollow spaces of upper end of the largest bones of humerus and femur filled with bone marrow. For a normal healthy person, the average life of RBC is 20 days. After that these are destroyed and the iron from RBC gets deposited in kidney, spleen, liver and bone marrow and recycled into fresh haemoglobin in the body. Haemoglobin is made up of two compoents -1) 'Haem' of iron in the ferrous state (Fe++) and 2) 'globin' protein which helps the iron to remain in ferrous state. Globin like any other proteins in the living cell is a very complex substance made up of certain number of builder blocks called amino acids arranged in a certain sequence. Any change of one or two atoms in the protein molecules produce entirely different substance. The globin protein being the most important component of red blood cells (RBC) consists of two pairs each of alpha (with 141 amino acids) and beta (with 146 amino acids) polypeptide chains, the synthesis of which is under the sole control of gene. The cause of thalassaemia is therefore attributed to the abnormal structural arrangement in alpha (16 p) and beta (11 p) gene. The union of male semen ard female ovum give birth to a child. The male carries one X- and one Y- sex chromosomes and the female carries a pair of X- sex chromosomes. The affected child inherits one out of a pair of abnormal chromosomes (genes) from its father and the other from its mother. Thalassaemia is thus a hereditary, autosomal genetic disorder with 25% recurrence risk in each pregnancy. The age of onset varies in different types of Thalassaemia. In beta-thalassaemia (severe type/beta 0), it starts between 6 months to 1 year of life. In thalassaemia intermedia (beta+), it starts between age 2-4 years and there is another type known as HbE (mild type) which is very common in Eastern part of India. Alpha thalassaemia patients die within mother's womb. The basic problem with a thalassaemic child is its inability to maintain normal haemoglobin level, paritcularly for supplying fresh oxygen in the respirative system of the body. It is a non-curable disorder and therefore, it is absolutely essential to supply donor RBCs to thalassaemic patients through periodic blood transfusion. The symptoms of thalassaemia disease are:-1) anaemia i.e. haemoglobin content less than 10 gm/decilitre; 2) enlargement of spleen, liver and heart by the deposition of excess iron; 3) skeletal deformities and decay of teeth due to deficiency of Calcium level; 4) glandular (endocrine glands) problem causing retarded growth, disturbed pubertal development, diabetis; 5) liver related problems such as jaundice, cerosis of liver; 6) blackening of skin due to absorption of iron; vitamin-C deficiency due to excess iron. ASTRO-DIAGNOSIS OF THALASSAEMIA Astro-diagnosis of thalassaemia disease requires the consideration.of the following planets and house significators: 1. Planets a) Mars - Mars is the karaka or significator of red colouring matter of blood, haemoglobin, iron, circulation of blood, RBC of blood, veins and arteries, bone marrow, minerals- cobalt, iron, copper present in the blood, vitamin- 12, amino acid, blood related disease. b) Jupiter - Jupiter is the karaka for, spleen, the blood forming organ, blood purifying organ like liver, pancreas, kidney, vitamins- 12 and B6, diabetes, jaundice. c) Sun- Sun is the karaka for father, body, gives oxygen to the blood, stomach, bony constitution of the body, heart, brain, embryo, growth of the body cells, blood carrying veins and arteries, bile, vitality. d) Moon - Moon is the karaka for mother, early childhood (1 - 7 years), growth and nourishment of the body, watery part of the body, blood, stomach, spleen, heart, bloodlessness(anaemia). e) Mercury - Mercury is the karaka for near childhood or boyhood, lower abdomen, thyroid gland, nerves and vervous system, skin disease, lord of Kanya Rasi- the sixth house of natural zodiac being the karaka for disease and health. f) Venus – semen, ovum, sex organs, face, lustre of body, glands. g) Saturn – the worst malefic is the natural karaka for all diseases- its chronicity, severrity and incurability, longevity or death, spleen, liver, skin, bones, teeth, Calcium deficiency. h) Rahu – Being equivalent to Saturn, Rahu js the karaka for all diseases- its chronicity and incurability, bone marrow, liver, enlargement of spleen. 2. Watery signs of the natural Zodiac All three watery Signs of natural zodiac, i.e. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces and their respective lords Moon, Mars and Jupiter, 4th, 8th and 12th houses from Lagna, Sun, Moon and their lords rule over the blood. 3. Houses and House Lords a) Lagna and lagna lord – body as a whole. b) Sixth house of natural zodiac i.e. Kanya Rasi and sixth house from lagna, Sun and Moon and their lords rule over diseases and health. With the affliction in the 5th (12th from 6th house) or 6th house by conjunction or aspect with malefic palanets, the disease becomes dreadful and acute. c) Fourth, eighth and twelfth houses of natural zodiac and 4th , 8th and 12th houses from lagna and their lords are the rulers of blood. d) Eighth house and its lord - karaka for longevity, death, chronicity, severity and incurability of disease, immunity and inheritance (inherited disease), progeny (8th house= 5th from 10th (father) and 5th from 4th (mother). e) Maraka-sthanas and their lords (death inflictors)– Houses 2 (12th from 3rd house) and 7 (12th from 8th house) f) Fifth House from lagna and its lord and 5th house of natural Zodiac, i.e. Simha Rasi (Sun) - Karaka for womb, progeny, abdomen, liver, spleen, pancreas, stomac. g) Ninth House from lagna and.its lord or the ninth house of natural zodiac, i.e. Dhanu Rasi (Jupiter) - karaka for father, inheritence, spleen, the seat of red bone marrow, femur or thigh bones extending from groin to knee, recovery from disease. h) Tenth House and its lord - Tenth house is the 4th house of 7th house (mother’s husband or father of the native). . i) Twelfth house and its lord or 12th house of natural Zodiac, i.e. Meen Rasi (Jupiter) is the karaka for blood, disease, hospitalisation. Jupiter itself does not cause any disease but when aflicted may affect blood, lungs, liver, spleen and indirectly heart. 4. Disease inflicting planets and house of disease Any planet, be it benefic or malefic, may give rise to a disease from any bhava or house that generally correspond to signs of zodiac (imagined as a supernatural human form ‘Kalpurusha’) representing various parts or organs of the body. For spotting diseases, first, It is necessary to examine and identify whether a planet is capable of inflicting a disease in a specific part or organ of the body. This is generally ascertained by an examination of a) the 6th house or its lord, b) the planet occupying the 6th, c) the planet aspecting the 6th or its lord, d) the house(s) or planet(s) receiving the aspects of planets occupying the 6th or the lord of the 6th, e) planet or planets in association with the 6th house or its lord by conjunction, mutual aspects, mutual exchange of houses or by mutual exchange of their respective stars, f) planet or planets occupying the constellation of the disease inflictng planet. Next, it is required to identify the location or house of the disease. For locating a disease, the house where the disease inflicting planet is placed in the natal chart is not that important as the house they own. Barring Rahu and Ketu planets rule over two signs. The signications of the planet and the significations of moolatrikona sign house of the planet as relevant to health problems indicate the possible nature, location and time of onset of the disease. The most afflicted house or zodiacal sign and its lord with the concentrated malefic influences also need be examined for locating the disease in the body. Diseases generally make their appearance during major periods (dasha), subperiods (antardasha) of sub-sub periods (pratyantardasha) of the disease inflicting planets. Let us now take a close look at a few birth-charts of thalassaemic patients for astrodiagnosis of the disease: Chart No.1(A fhalassaernic patient of β-type)- Born on 25-11-1992 at 8-30 p.m. (IST) at Durgapur (West Bengal) Lat. 23°30' N., Long. 87°30'E. Asc(7): 3s1° 7' ; Sun(17): 7s9°15'; Moon(18): 7s 25° 4'; Mars(8): 3 s 3° 44'; Mercury(16):7sR 1°28'; Jupiter(13):5s15°4'; Venus(20): 8s 20° 43'; Saturn(22): 9s 19° 44'; Rahu(18): 7s 28°35'; Ketu(5): 1s 28° 35'. Balance of Mercury Dasa at birth: 9- 0-1 Jupiter Ketu Rahu Asc Mars RASI Asc Merc Mon NAVAMSA Sat Venus Sat Mars Sun Merc Moon Rahu Jupiter Venus Sun Ket In the chart the sign, Cancer, rises in the ascendant. Jupiter (6th and 9th lord) as well as Saturn (7th and 8th lord), being the lords of moolatrikona signs, along with Rahu and Ketu are the functional malefics for this lagna. Moreover, Saturn, being the 8th lord, is the worst malefic planet. Mars (in Saturn star), though a yogakaraka planet (5th and 10th lord), is weak as it is in its sign of debilitation almost in exact conjunction with the ascendant point and closely afflicts all the houses occupied and aspected (lagna, 4th,7th and 8th) as well as the planet, Saturn and is itself afflicted by Saturn and Rahu. The Mars as well as the lagna lord, Moon, are further weak as their dispositors are respectively in their signs of debilitation. Debilitated Mars occupies the house of the lagna lord, Moon with which it exchanges houses and therefore gets linked. The debilitated Moon (in the star of 12th lord Mercury) is weak, badly placed and afflicted in the 5th house in Rahu-Ketu axis (RKA) and is in association with the malefics, Sun (2nd lord in Saturn star), retrograde Mercury (3rd and 12th lord in the star of 6th lord, Jupiter), Rahu and Ketu in mutual aspect. The inherent weaknesses of the lagna and its lord (the body), Moon (mind and mentality), the Sun (vitality and bony structure of the body) and the Mercury (nerves and nervous system) produce congenital, adverse and incurable results in terms of health. This connection is adverse in nature and the malefic results get further aggravated in terms of health. The lord of 4th and 11th,Venus (the ruler of beauty and luster of the body), though in its own star, besides being malefic for this lagna, occupies the 6th house (house of disease) from lagna. Venus, being the lord of 64th Navamsha, behaves as a malefic planet, further afflicted by the aspect of Rahu and is hemmed between malefics on its either sides and aspects the 12th which is vacant and whose lord, retrograde Mercury in the star of 6th lord, Jupiter, occupies the 5th. Venus is further weak as its dispositer, Jupiter is weak and badly placed and its house (11th, the 6th from 6th-an alternative house of disease) is occupied by the malefic Ketu. The lord of 6th and 9th houses, Jupiter (in Moon star), is weak and badly placed in its inimical sign (Kanya Rasi) in the 3rd house from the lagna coupled with mutual aspects between Jupiter and Ketu from the 11th house. The 6th lord, Jupiter, occupies the 11th in the Navamsha. The 7th lord, Saturn (the karaka for all diseases, chronicity and serverity of disease), though in its own house (the marakasthana), is also the the lord of the 8th, further afflicted by the aspect of the 6th lord Jupiter coupled with mutual aspects (opposition) between Mars and Saturn. This connection is adverse in nature and the malefic results get further aggravated in terms of health. Jupiter and Saturn are in the star of Moon and therefore get linked. In Navamsha, 7th and 8th lord, Saturn, occupies the 12th and is the dispositer of the lagna lord, Moon. Mars occupies the 2nd, the marakasthana and is in mutual aspects (opposition) with the Moon in Navamsha. The influence of a natural benefic on Saturn is nullified as the Jupiter acts as a malefic in the present case and do not render any protection to the native in terms of health. Kanya and Meena Rasis, the sensitive signs of natural zodiac (6th and 12th houses), and their lords (Mercury and Jupiter) are weak, badly placed and afflicted. 2nd , 4th , 6th 9th 10th and 12th and their lords are afflicted by aspects and Kendra influence of malefic planets. The 5th house is afflicted by unfavourable conjunction and aspects of planets, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu in the 12th from Jupiter, the karaka of the 6th Bhava. The afflictions to 5th/6th houses produce dreadful and incurable disease either by conjunction, association or aspect. The Vimshottari dasha (MD/AD/PD) operating at the time of birth was Mercury-RahuSaturn. Retrograde Mercury, being in the star of 6th lord, Jupiter is the 12th lord occupying the 5th house in RKA in association with weak, badly placed and afflicted planets, Sun (2nd lord), Moon (lagna lord) and Rahu. Rahu is in the star of 12th lord, Mercury. Saturn, the 7th and 8th lord, is in the 7th house, a maraka and aspected by the 6th lord, Jupiter from 3rd house. Mars is in mutual aspects (opposition) with the PD lord, Saturn. CONCLUSION Following combinations indicate hereditary and genetic blood related diseases. 1. Mars, the main significator of blood may be posited in the 3rd, 8th, 7th, 10th, 12th from Satum or having mutual aspects (square/opposition) between them. 2. All planets and houses ruling blood, namely 4th, 8th, 12th houses from Lagna and of natural Zodiac, i.e. Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces and their lords Moon, Mars or Rahu, particularly Saturn-Rahu or Mars-Rahu. 3. The subordinate karaka for blood Jupiter may be posited in the 6th , 8th , 11th (6th from 6th) or 12th from Saturn. 4. Jupiter related to Mars, Saturn or Rahu in any of the four combinations. 5. Sun conjoined with the evil houses/lords. 6. Lagna, 5th house and Simha Rasi (Sun), 6th house and Kanya Rasi (Mercury) afflicted or hemmed between rnalefics. 7. Veflus posited in the evil houses, afflicted by lords of evil houses. 8. Due to the inherited nature of the disease, some connection between 4th, 8th, 10th and 9th with the 6th house/lord, karaka planets ruling blood and disease inflicting planets requires to to be fulfiled. 9. The connection of Dasa-antardasa lords with evil houses/lords, i.e. 6th , 8th or 12th . The affliction of Sun, Moon, lagna lord, 4th, 8th and 12th houses of the natural zodiac, i.e. Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces and from lagna and their lords, the significator planets Mars (main) and Jupiter, Moon, Sun, Venus (subordinate) ruling the blood are afflicted by way of situation, conjunction or aspect by malefic planets or are badly placed in the evil houses or conjoined with evil lords, and in some way related (by way of situation, conjunction, aspect, exchange of houses and exchang of star lords) with the 6th house from Lagna or sixth house of natural Zodiac i.e. Virgo or its lord and disease inflicting planets coupled with malefic influence of Saturn and Rahu, the worst malefic and natural karaka for all diseases and Mars, the main planet ruling blood, thalassaemia disease makes its appearance. Moreover, the congenital disease as is the case with thalassaemia should be judged from 9th house (father, inheritence), 4th house (mother), 10th house (7th from 4th, i.e. mother's husband or father of the native) and 8th house (5th from 10th and 4th, i.e. the progeny) in combination with the sixth house and its lord.
