Regions
Theme 1: Location
• Where is It?
• Why is It There?
Two Types of
Location
•Absolute
•Relative
Absolute Location
•
•
•
•
A specific place on the Earth’s surface
Uses a grid system
Latitude and longitude
A global address
North Carolina
Absolute Location
• North Carolina
36° N Latitude
79° W longitude
• Chapel Hill
35° 55' N Latitude
79° 05' W Longitude
OK…but how does this all work?
Latitude lines run east/west but they measure north or
south of the equator (0°) splitting the earth into the
Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.
Latitude

Lines of
latitude are
numbered
from 0° at the
equator to
90° N.L. at
the North
Pole.

South Pole
Lines of
latitude are
numbered
from 0° at
the equator
to 90° S.L.
at the South
Pole.
Longitude
Lines of longitude begin
at the Prime Meridian.
60° W is the
60° line of
longitude west
of the Prime
W
Meridian.
60° E is the
60° line of
longitude
east of the
E Prime
Meridian.
The Prime Meridian is located at 0°. It is neither
east or west
By combining latitude and longitude,
any location can be pinpointed
A location’s coordinates
(____° N or S, ____ ° E or W)
Application
N
W
E
S
North America is in the Northern Hemisphere because it is north
of the Equator. North America is in the Western Hemisphere
because it is west of the Prime Meridian.
Every city in the world has an absolute
location based on latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
• Where a place is
in relation to
another place
• Uses directional
words to describe
– Cardinal and
intermediate
directions
Relative Location Terms
Cardinal Directions- The basic North, South, East, and
West
Intermediate DirectionsNortheast and Northwest
Southeast and Southwest
Compass Rose- a full compass addressing the cardinal
and the intermediate directions
The Compass Rose
