Great Ideas Lesson Planner Lesson Title: Electronic Career Portfolios – Making your online debut in the 21st century! Subject: Design, Multimedia, Web Technologies (6632) Time Duration: Two weeks Teacher: Mrs. Karen Carrier School: Content Standards/Competencies: Eastern Montgomery High School Related SOL Objectives: (include all applicable, example English 10.7) 001 – Demonstrate Virginia’s Workplace Readiness Skills in course activities. 012 – Identify appropriate audience, purpose, requirements, and production schedule for the project. 013 – Apply principles of design, layout, and typography. 049 – Research and develop the architectural requirements for a Web site. 050 – Use programming language or Web page creation software to create Web sites 051 – Apply Web page design features 052 – Create hypertext links to other pages or sites. 053 – Proofread, edit, and test a Web site on multiple browsers and platforms. 054 – Develop a plan for posting, updating, and maintaining a secure Web site. 056 – Critique a Web site according to accepted Web design principles. 067 – Create or update a printed resume using desktop publishing features. 068 – Assemble a professional portfolio that includes a resume in a format suitable for online posting and a variety of printed documents, multimedia presentations/projects, and/or Web projects produced in the course. How can the students better market themselves in today’s job market? By creating an online portfolio, students will be able to successfully compete in today’s challenging job market. 2. How can the teacher integrate the required competencies into one unit? By incorporating the career competencies into an online portfolio, the teacher will be covering many competencies in one unit. 3. How can the teacher relate the material to each student and provide purposeful instruction? Each student will be able to create a personal portfolio that will focus on their individual career objective. 1. How to research a career using online search tools. 2. How to write a resume and cover letter for a specific career objective. 3. How to highlight skills and provide relevant examples of work. 4. How to prepare sample interview questions and answers. 5. How to use web design software to develop an online portfolio. 6. How to create a web page template that can be used on several pages of a web site. 7. How to use photo editing software to create interactive buttons for navigation on a web site. 8. How to link several web pages together. 9. How to properly critique another student’s web site. 10. How to publish and maintain a web site. Students will do: 1. Research a career of their interest. 2. Create a resume and cover letter for the chosen career. 3. Prepare sample interview questions and practice answering them in mock interviews. 4. Collect samples of work to showcase their skills. 5. STUDENT ASSESSMENT Prior knowledge Students will have a prior knowledge of career portfolio contents. Teacher will check for accuracy and completeness of the basic career portfolio contents before continuing to web site development. These contents will include: resume, cover letter, sample interviews, applications, soft skills, and thank you letters. Ongoing throughout lesson Students will be using peer review techniques to assess each other’s portfolios as they progress through the assignments. The teacher will also give feedback to help direct students through the portfolio creation process. By the end of the lesson Students will make a final presentation to the entire class of their completed web site. The teacher will use a rubric to determine if proper web design techniques were used and all elements were included. 3. LEARNING ACTIVITIES/INSTRUCTION Introduction (hook) What students are doing Conclusion 1. Students’ attention will be gained by showing student and personal examples of e-career portfolios. 1. Students will begin by brainstorming various web design possibilities and drawing a sketch of their web site using a production storyboard. 1. After peer reviews have been conducted and final edits made, students will present their e-portfolios to their classmates. 2. A class discussion will be held about the benefits of giving yourself on online presence in the 21st century job market. 2. Students will then create a template that will be used for all pages in their web site. 3. Students will be given a timeline to see the various parts of the e-career portfolio creation assignment. 4. There will also be a rubric provided to show what areas students should focus on. 3. Once the template is created, students will create various pages from this template, including a resume, career, skills, interview, and interests page. 2. Also, the teacher will post the web sites on the county server for a year after graduation, unless the student requests that the portfolio remain longer and the teacher will try to meet this request. 4. Once pages are created, students will link them together and insert relevant content on each page. 5. Students will use a peer review process to provide feedback. Accommodations Extra support: Individual attention will be paid to those students who need special accommodations. The special education teacher will be provided a copy of the lesson plan to allow for accommodations to be made for those students with Individualized Education Plans. Enrichment or early finishers: Early finishers can use extra time to put special effects on their portfolio and/or add additional projects and samples of work to highlight them further. These students will also be encouraged to assist other students with problems. Various learning styles: The teacher will provide a variety of teaching materials including written instructions along with verbal instructions. A rubric and timeline will be provided for those students needing more structure and individual assistance will be provided to those students who need hands-on instruction. Limited English proficiency: Translation web sites and dictionaries may be used to assist these students. Required or Supplemental Materials and Resources 1. Computer lab 2. Web design creation software, such as Adobe Dreamweaver and Fireworks or Microsoft FrontPage. If these are unavailable, Notepad can be used to create HTML coded documents. 3. Photo editing software is preferred, such as Adobe Fireworks or Photoshop. 4. Manuals with instructions for each step of the eportfolio creation process. Related Technology Web design, photo editing, word-processing Research/Best Practices/Strategy This lesson plan is best completed at the end of the Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies course as a final project. 4. WRAP-UP (5-10 min) Evidence of student learning/understanding Students will present their portfolios to the class. The teacher will lead a discussion on the benefit of posting these portfolios online and how they will have access to them for at least one year. Teacher will explain that if a student wishes for their portfolio to remain longer, they will need to contact the teacher to request this at a later date. Homework The only homework required for this project is to brainstorm possible career choices and designs for the portfolio itself. Also, once the portfolio is created, students should insert their e-portfolio address onto resumes and tell future potential employers to check it out. 5.
