Crash Course Video Assignment
Your task is to create a study guide for one of the Crash Course videos. Everyone will be given a video that they will
watch and present to the class. Your study guide will be due January 27th. Everyone will then present their Crash
Course video over the course of the semester and lead a discussion centered on the video and the subject that it
covers. Some will be review (including videos seen already in class), and others will be new to the class.
Part 1 – Preparation (50% of the project grade)

Create a summary of the video. Describe the history that John Green is teaching about. This must be at
least 100 words.

Create a list of the important historical figures in the video (3 minimum) and explain why they are important
to history.

Create a list of 5 important terms presented in the video. Explain what each term means and explain why it
is relevant to world history.

Create a study guide for your video. You can base this on our chapter study guides, or you can create your
own format. This will be given out to your classmates before your presentation.

Create five thought provoking discussion questions based on your video. Your questions should cover the
entire video, focusing on the “why/how” of history. They should elicit more than a one word answer.
o You should also provide answers to each of the questions you create.

Tell us to whom is the open letter addressed?

Tell us “what’s in the secret compartment.”

Tell us the secret phrase from this video
Part 2 – In-Class Discussion (50% of the project grade)

Students will watch the video BEFORE the presentation day in class.

The presenters will then lead a 10-15 minute discussion over the information.
o Key Terms:

The first part of the presentation will consist of the introduction of the 5 key terms the
group identified in the video

Presenter will work with the class to rank the terms in order of historical importance (as it
relates to the topic)
o The Discussion

Should center on the thought provoking questions that you created.

The discussion should not be a review of the answers on the study guide
o The discussion should focus on the video and the historical period referenced

You will be graded on the quality of the discussion that you lead and your ability to engage your classmates.
Make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for students to participate in the discussion. Everyone
should be engaged.
