Boosters…..
What “Boosters” enable you to be effective
as you’d like to be in your job?
Barriers…
What “Barrier” prohibits you from being as
effective as you’d like to be in your job?

Additional
Responsibilities
The Missouri Plan…
Request:
Missouri should initiate and establish a new
advanced teaching certificate, similar to the
current Missouri “Reading Specialist” certificate,
to be referred to as the “Elementary
Mathematics Specialists” certificate to
recognize teachers with special training and
expertise in mathematics content and pedagogy
at the elementary school level.
The Missouri Plan…
Why?
• Professional preparation program focused on
mathematics teaching and learning at the
elementary level formally acknowledged in
the state
• Can serve students in schools in a variety of
ways—classroom teachers, lead or mentor
teachers, and school or district-based
mathematics specialists
The Missouri Plan
Why?
• Critical need to improve mathematics learning
opportunities for students
• Regional centers report that they cannot provide
enough training for elementary teachers
• AMTE
Critical Issues
• Grade-Level Expectations/Clarifications—Not
Assessing, Not Important
• Vocabulary/terminology
• Effective Practices/Instructional Strategies, but
lacking math content knowledge
• “Tied to Texts Syndrome” rather than what is
important to teach
• Inexperienced problem solvers
don’t know what to do when they
don’t know what to do.
• Experienced problem solvers do
know what to do when they don’t
know what to do.
Critical Issues
• Cursory coverage or skipping content/strands
(favorite unit—sons particular grade didn’t do
math for a month…later math classes assigned
to another teacher)
• Manipulatives (no use, not using effectively to
enrich instruction and learning)
• Math coaches/specialists appointed with little
if any guidance in their role/positions
The Missouri Plan…
What?
Part I
• Mathematics Content
-Number and Operations - 3 hours
-Geometry and Measurement – 3 hours
-Algebraic Reasoning – 3 hours
-Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability – 3

Critical Components of a K – 5
Mathematics Specialist Program of
Study
• Utilize technology to the fullest potential in
course offerings for the certification
• Flexible in regards to when courses are offered
• Coordination among Missouri Universities to
develop/implement program (remiss if I didn’t
mention the commitment, collaboration, and
coordinators of MO Higher Ed Mathematics
Teacher Educators)

Chunk-a-Hunk of Info
A chunk~~~ a coherent group of items
of information that we can remember
as it if were a single item.
A word is a chunk of letters, remembered as
easily as a single letter.
•Experts organize information in large chunks
•Novices work with isolated bits of
information
Lesson Learned
Smaller familiar
chunks may be
easier to internalize,
learn, and
implement.
The “Right” Angle
Looking at the same thing from different
perspectives can broaden our
understanding…
Lesson Learned
Sometimes we have
to look at things
from a different
perspective or
through the lens of
another’s eyes.
It Takes Two…
(Source: Tom Jackson)
This game is for 2 players. Each player puts
their hand behind their back and makes a
value from 1 – 10 using their fingers. When
the teacher calls reveal, each person
reveals the number they have created. The
first person to find the sum of the fingers
that are revealed on both hands is the
winner.
Lesson Learned
Some things you
can control some
you can’t, so control
what you can.
The Doctor’s Dilemma…
Suppose you are a doctor faced with a patient
who has a tumor in the stomach. It is impossible to
operate on the patient, but unless the tumor is
destroyed the patient will die. There is a kind of ray that
can be used to destroy the tumor. If the rays reach the
tumor all at once at a sufficiently high intensity, the
healthy tissue that the rays pass through on the way to
the tumor will also be destroyed. At lower intensities
the rays are harmless to healthy tissue, but they will not
affect the tumor either. What type of procedure might
be used to destroy the tumor with the rays and at the
same time avoid destroying the healthy tissue?
Lesson Learned
The path(s) of least
resistance may take
them by surprise.
A Penny for your Thoughts…
• What direction is the profile of Lincoln facing?
• Are there any numbers on the penny?
• What words are on the penny? Where are
they located?
A Penny for your Thoughts…
• Republican facing right
• Looking to the year
• Liberty at the
backbone of politics
• God is on high
Selective Abandonment
• We focus on and remember
only the important “stuff” we
need to know.
• What do you really need to
know about a penny for it to
be useful to you???
Lesson Learned
Providing less
information can
sometimes yield
greater results.
•Spectacled
face
•Liar on
the page
Lesson Learned
Connect learning to
past experiences or
create new
experiences to learn
from.
We’re not just preparing
them for assessments...
We’re preparing them
for life…
Experienced problem solvers do know
what to do when they don’t know what to
do.
Lesson Learned
Always do what’s best
for kids.
Remember the 10
most important two
letter words…
If it is to be
it is up to
me!!!
