judgment we make of ourselves – Only cultural creatures can experience shame and guilt Values and norms do not describe actual behavior so much as they suggest how we should behave Ideal culture seem as strange to outsiders as their language, values, and norms Society’s artifacts partly reflect underlying cultural values Material culture reflects a society’s level of technology ◦ Knowledge
