Resolution/Proclamation for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September 2009
WHEREAS,
… is a federally recognized Indian Tribe
organized pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 and all
pertinent amendments thereof; and
WHEREAS,
… is governed by a Tribal Council made
up of elected representatives who act in accordance with the powers
granted to it by its Constitution and By-Laws; and
WHEREAS,
in the year 2009, the month of September has been declared National Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS,
it is known that almost one third of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65
during their prime work years, and at any age prostate cancer devastates families through
loss of income, partnership, and support; and
WHEREAS,
Northern Plains American Indians have a higher prostate cancer rate than men from other
American Indian communities in the U.S. according to the annual report to the nation on
the status of cancer: Cancer 2007 ; and
WHEREAS,
research suggests that men could reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality if they
followed recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines, including examination by a
health care provider and increased awareness and use of early detection practices;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Tribal Council does hereby approve
Tribal support for the development and implementation of cancer
screening initiatives in order to improve cancer prevention and early
detection for the … Tribe and for Northern Plains
Native Americans.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that nothing in this resolution diminishes, divests,
alters, or otherwise affects any inherent, treaty, statutory or other rights of
the … Tribe over the property or activities described
herein. … Tribe expressly retains all rights and
authority over the property and activities described herein, including but
not limited to legislative, regulatory, adjudicatory, and taxing powers.
