As patients age and disease progresses, medical histories change. In addition, new medical treatment modalities and pharmaceuticals are utilized to optimize health. These changes have an impact on managing medical emergencies. This course will include: • Update on CPR • Update on medications necessary for the contemporary emergency kit • Automatic External Defibrillator update • Most common medical emergencies • New anticoagulants and effect on bleeding as a complication associated with dental surgery 2:00 to 5:00 The Third Molar Dilemma-when to extract, when to observe There has been significant debate and discussion on the appropriate management of maxillary and mandibular third molars. Some associations have established policies or statements that warn patients to not undergo removal. Other associations or groups have published statements regarding the benefit of the procedures. This course will include: • Review of complications associated with surgical procedure • Discuss decision-making strategies to assist the oral health care provider to make recommendations to their patients The Case for Careful Observation (and avoidance of allegations of failure to diagnose) It is important that oral health care providers perform clinical and imaging examinations of patients to detect pathology and need for treatment. In some situations, some clinical findings are difficult to delineate or manage and may warrant further evaluation or observation. It obviously facilitates good implant placement but it can also be used for ridge augmentation for fixed or removable prosthetics. Socket grafting is an intricate procedure. It requires a lot of little steps, each one is quite simple but the compilation of getting every little step right is complicated. There are also unintended surprises along the way and one must have the experience and knowledge to deal with these. Dr. Cochrane will discuss socket grafting with a step-by-step illustration of procedures and provide the attendees with a complete list of all the materials needed for this procedure. Krell What do we know about cracked teeth? This presentation will answer the following questions: • What is a “cracked tooth” versus a root fracture? • How do we diagnose a cracked tooth? • What are predisposing features resulting in a cracked tooth? • How should cracked teeth be treated? • What is the prognosis for a cracked tooth with a reversible pulpitis? • What is the prognosis for a cracked tooth with a irreversible pulpitis? • What is the prognosis for a cracked tooth with a pulpal necrosis? Tanya Dunlap, PhD Periodontal Solutions for Everyday Practice: Change the Microenvironment and Address the Biofilm Cause Description: Biofilm infections that cause periodontal disease present significant treatment challenges. Not only do biofilms have defensive capabilities that make treatment less effective, but they are also difficult to address between office visits. Toothbrush, rinse, and floss just don’t get deep enough. One approach that offers better biofilm management is the prescription tray delivery of oxidizing and oxygenating agents deep into periodontal pockets. Research shows statistically significant reductions in bleeding and pocketing when prescription tray delivery is combined with scaling. Case studies explain how doctors incorporate the special delivery into treatment plans. You’ll walk away from this course with practical solutions that you can implement tomorrow. Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to: 1. Identify the benefits and limitations of peroxide usage for patients with periodontal disease. 2. Understand how and when to incorporate adjunctive prescription tray delivery into treatment protocols. 3. Identify good patient candidates for prescription tray delivery. Ebon Turner, B.S. Oral Cancer Screening with VELscope Vx The traditional clinician’s head and neck examination is best at detecting visible changes on the tissues surface. Unfortunately, the tissue changes that lead to oral cancer start below the surface of the epithelium at the basement membrane. These changes are not normally visible to 13 the unaided eye until the disease progresses to the epithelial surface. Enhanced screening is at the core of the new approach of prevention. Technology now exists that allows the dental clinician to easily detect pre-malignant conditions and much more at the earliest stages. Now with frequent exposure in the media, increased legal claims, and links to the HPV virus, patients are beginning to understand, differentiate, and expect adjunctive technologies to be used for enhanced screening and prevention. Course Outline 1. Oral Cancer and understanding the new risks 2. VELscope Vx: Understanding the technology, application and effectiveness. 3. Enhancing communications: Obtaining high patient acceptance regardless of insurance coverage, plus process of referral if required 4. Implementing into practice a. Pricing strategies b. Practice growth Upon completion, participants will possess a better understanding of Fluorescence technology, including the interpretation of findings and proper treatment protocols. Clinicians will also be provided with information regarding documentation, patient interaction, and billing options. HCD-dentist / HCST-staff Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 5 - 7, 2016 Know Your Patients’ Medications and Their Impact on Dental Treatment! Your patients are living longer thanks to their medications but many of the physician-prescribed medications used by your patients have dental implications and side effects affecting your treatment plan. When is it safe to have the patient stop taking their anticoagulants for dental treatment? Some of these medications are the drugs of choice of “doctor shoppers”. Some medications are more likely to cause violent behavior and others can cause a “burning mouth syndrome” and, in fact, others may cause sexual dysfunction. Should I use caution when prescribing NSAIDs with antihypertensives? Is antibiotic prophylaxis required for patients with orthopedic prostheses? This presentation includes the indications, contraindications, and side effects of the most commonly prescribed medications. Many of these medications were not approved when you took your pharmacology course in dental school. These medications represent 30% of all prescriptions taken by your dental patients and familiarity with these drugs will provide the dental practitioner with a better appreciation for the health profile of your dental patient. At the conclusion of this course, the attendees will know: • Prescription, OTC medications, and foods that could adversely interact with dental drugs. • Why your patient is taking their medications. • What oral side effects may be caused by these medications • Maximum doses for commonly prescribed pain medications. • When not to prescribe NSAIDs. • How to manage patients taking some of the newer anticoagulant medications • How to combine analgesics to maximize their effects. • Indications and contraindications for opiate analgesics. • Current recommendations for SBE and orthopedic prosthesis prophylaxis Speaker. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
