This building has in part been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The Medical School was built beside the 1870s new Royal Infirmary and opened in 1884 to house medical departments decanted from Old College. The three storey Anatomy Museum separated the public quadrangle to the north from the private Anatomy quadrangle behind. The east side also contains the McEwan Hall Reception Room. Post-war Medical Extension to NW corner George Square by Walter Ramsay, 1956-62, with some modifications by Basil Spence. Location. The Medical School is located within what is referred to as the Central Area South Campus of Edinburgh University and is extremely well served by bus. The building is within approx one mile of the city centre and within ¾ mile of the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre. National Museum of Scotland Teviot Place McEwan Hall MEDICAL SCHOOL George Square / Gardens Parking. Within the Central Campus there are numerous parking spaces. All spaces require a permit, “blue badge” or are “pay and display”. There is a university car park within the Medical School quadrangle; including disabled parking areas; however parking is limited. Visitors are recommended to contact their Medical School host if parking is required. Parking elsewhere is available, but is not considered to be within close proximity of the Medical School entrances. The car park comprises of a smooth tarmac surface which is suitable for wheelchair users. There is access from the car park to the main entrances, but assistance is generally recommended. City of Edinburgh Council “pay and display” parking bays are available to the West of Drummond Street (see location map). The car park surface comprises of granite setts and there are limited drop kerbs to the adjacent footpaths. Outside Access. The Medical School Buildings main is off Teviot Place and through the imposing arched entrance. There are seven entrance doorways off the car park, each doorway giving access to differing departments of medical expertise and teaching. Listed below is a brief description of the seven entrance doorways (each entry point has an associated wall mounted identification board; each doorway is numbered). Pedestrian access from Teviot Place into the parking quadrangle (also doorway access) is over two low thresholds (50mm), and would not be recommended for a self propelled wheelchair. The adjacent vehicle access however could be used with care and awareness of vehicles. Doorway 1. There is a low (75mm) threshold leading to the wide entrance doors. This gives access to the Sidney Smith Lecture Theatre and the Centre for Population Health Sciences. Access is via swipe card. Doorway 2. There is a low (75mm) threshold leading to wide rising stairway which leads to the McEwan Hall Reception Room. The Reception Room is not accessible to wheelchair users. Doorway 3. There is ramp access to this doorway which leads into the Biomedical Teaching Organisation facility. Access is via swipe card. The entrance doors are wide and lead into a very large entrance hallway. This level incorporates a disabled toilet. There is no lift in this area of the building. William Robertson Building (Doorway 4) There is a wide, shallow ramp leading to this doorway. The doorway leads into, a wide circulation corridor, off of which, and close to the entry door, is the student support office and the Meadow Lecture Theatre. Beyond the mid corridor door is a passenger lift and approx. 20metres further on there is a disabled platform lift allowing access to the lower level offices and teaching rooms. Doorway 5. This doorway gives access to the Teviot Lecture Theatre (down approximately 10 steps). Wheelchair access or persons with mobility issues is however possible via the lecture theatre fire exit doors, easily accessible from the Medical School quadrangle car park area. Doorway 6. There is a small, slightly steep, ramp access to this doorway. Access is via swipe card. There is a disabled push pad operated door opener for the wide timber entrance doors giving access to a small entrance hall. The doors off the hall (adjacent to the entrance door) all open from disabled push pads allowing access to administration offices and teaching areas. If you are arriving on foot or by wheelchair and intend to access the Medical School Buildings via the car park entrance please pay due care and attention for moving vehicles. Wheelchair access is possible via the car park entrance but is not recommended without assistance. The main entrance is accessed via a threshold ramp. The main entrance door is double width, opens outwards and is automated using a door release button. The door release button is located at the top of the ramp to the right of the entrance door. A swipe card access point and pin pad are located beside the door release button. These can be used to access the building out of hours.
