What the Renewable Energy Can Do For Us? Econ 2505 Environmental Economics D-727 Ang Li Prof. S. MacDonald What is Renewable Energy? Renewable energy is energy that is generated from natural processes that are continuously replenished. This includes sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, tides, water, and various forms of biomass. This energy cannot be exhausted and is constantly renewed. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation. Also the words of Alternative energy is a important term used for an energy source that is an alternative to using fossil fuels. Generally, it indicates energies that are non-traditional and have low environmental impact. The term alternative is used to contrast with fossil fuels according to some sources. By most definitions alternative energy doesn't harm the environment, a distinction which separates it from renewable energy which may or may not have significant environmental impact. Renewable Energy is not far from us I have visited the Brooklyn Navy Yard building 92 twice for this project. The building was not a high technology building, but it does contain a lot of good design for renewable energy use. From using the sun to heat up water, using the rain water to flush the toilet, use of the underground water to heats and cool the building and use the scrap metal to create a sun screen to keep the building from direct sun light to save energy during summer time. The building 92 is a perfect sample for renewable energy. Everything that the building does is trying to save energy and save environment. Here is some the developed way that the building use to save the environment. Use it, and give it back Much of the water used in BLDG 92 comes from the ground directly beneath the building. The wells were dug down to 100 feet below ground at several locations around BLDG 92. water pumped from these wells passes through a heat exchange system in the building to provide heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. Once this pumped water has run though the building, it is discharge back underground in to a well on the north side of the building. By doing this, it saved a lot of electricity and fuel for heat. From the roof to the sewer In building 92, they discovered a tunnel was five feet in diameter and made of brick, so they turn it to a big water tank to store rainwater. The BLDG 92 use the rainwater that collected from the roof then store underground for use in the building’s toilets. By doing this BLDG 92 save 68,000 gallons of water per year. Heat from the Sun Instead of using a traditional hot water heater in BLDG 92, they heat water by the sun’s powerful rays. On the roof of this building is a solar installation which soaks up the sun’s rays and transfer the heat to water in pipes. This hot water is stored in a tank and then pumped to where people are using how water at. Eye Catching New Technology Nowadays people are finally realized the green house effect are true, and the technology that we developed before are draining the earth and really hurting ourselves. So the scientist are more focus on develop the technology will save energy and save the environment to make our home more sustainable. The Dutch Windwheel The Dutch Windwheel is a concept for an eyecatching 174-metre tall building in the port city of Rotterdam designed to act as a platform for a wide variety of groundbreaking renewable energy technologies. The outer ring houses about 40 rotating cabins on a giant rail system — whilst the inner ring will be constructed from a novel wind turbine that converts wind energy into electricity via a framework of stationary steel tubes. The new developed the technology, known as EWICON (Electrostatic Wind Energy Converter). It uses high voltages to produce electrically charged water droplets in a series of parallel horizontal elements to generate an electric field. As wind forces the droplets against this electric field, the converter is charged and creates a direct current (DC). This will be the first time this technology is used in a building. Tree generator French research and development company NewWind has devised a novel wind energy device inspired by the Topping out at some 36 feet tall, each Wind Tree features 72 silently spinning vertical axis micro-turbines designed to resemble leaves. These turbines have a 3,100-watt capacity that can either be fed into buildings via a main switchboard or hooked up to the grid using an inverter. According to NewWind, the main aim is to capture more gentle winds in urban environments — as low as two meters per second — which they claim can make each turbine operational for more than 280 days each year. look and feel of trees. Drive With Low Emission. Hybrid car sales have taken off in recent years, with a fuel-sipping combination of electric- and gas-powered technologies that simultaneously deliver energy efficiency, low emissions, and strong performance. The Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) — which played a pivotal role in putting hybrids on the road — has applied a similar strategy to its talent base and partnerships, bringing together the best minds from the worlds of research and industry. Many of the automobile company are join in the team to start research a new way to make the emission go low. Big Market for Electric Car Start with a great product – Tesla would be dead today if they didn’t build the best car available today. There are too many obstacles — range, lack of road trips, and buyer confusion to name a few. Tesla used electric technology to build a car that can’t be reproduced with a combustion engine. It’s as fast as a Porsche and gets the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon. It has very few moving parts. It is the most aerodynamic car made and has the most cargo space of any car in its class. It’s a sports car that seats seven. Big Market for Electric Car Electric car can’t go on a road trip? The answer is YES. Tesla superchargers are free for use that charge Model S and Model X in minutes instead of hours. Hundreds of charging stations are strategically placed to minimize stops during long distance travel and are conveniently located near restaurants, shopping centers, and WiFi hot spots. Each station contains multiple Superchargers to help you get back on the road quickly. Pay no more gas money!!! You can find a charging station with one touch on you car screen, and the car will even drew you a map to tell you how you want to plan your long trip, so you will never run out of power. Climate Action Plan On December 12 of 2015 President Obama announced the climate action plan which including the clean energy plan. The whole plan itself are to change the current climate situation in the U.S.A. The supreme court rejected plan this year because the law suit file by 29 state. The main plan got shut down, but the clean energy plan is still looking good and under review. The Clean Power Plan is a historic and important step in reducing carbon pollution from power plants that takes real action on climate change. It shaped by years of unprecedented outreach and public engagement, the final Clean Power Plan is fair, flexible and designed to strengthen the fast-growing trend toward cleaner and lower-polluting American energy. With strong but achievable standards for power plants, and customized goals for states to cut the carbon pollution that is driving climate change, the Clean Power Plan provides national consistency, accountability and a level playing field while reflecting each state’s energy mix.
