Deal compliance. Posts assessed as Band 3 fall outside New deal compliance, these posts are
therefore, subject to review to identify the action required to implement necessary changes to
achieve compliance as soon as possible. When such changes have received approval from the
Regional Task Force appropriate pay bandings will be implemented accordingly.
An introduction to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages the five adult hospitals in
Sheffield (Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Jessop Wing, Weston Park and Charles
Clifford hospitals).
As a trust we are responsible for the planning and delivery of the highest quality patient care and
provide services for patients from not only Sheffield and South Yorkshire but all parts of the UK.
We have an annual budget of around £690 million, employ over 13,000 staff and provide around
one million patient episodes each year, making us the second largest NHS trust in England.
As well as providing hospital services for our local population, our hospitals provide a range of
vital regional and national specialties. Regionally these include cardiac and orthopaedic surgery,
neurology and renal care. National services include pulmonary hypertension treatment, particular
ophthalmology, spinal and neurosurgical care, and specialist cancer treatments.
We have been one of the best performing NHS organisations in the country over the last five
years. In October 2007 the Healthcare Commission scored us excellent in use of resources and
excellent for quality of services. We are also proud of our record as having the lowest MRSA
infection rates amongst major teaching hospitals in the UK, according to figures released by the
Health Protection Agency in 2007. The Trust was awarded the Dr Foster’ Hospital of the Year
accolade in 2005.
We also have a strong tradition of research and the Trust leads on a number of key studies
including prostate cancer, diabetes, breast cancer and chronic chest disease.
An NHS Foundation Trust
We became one of the first NHS Foundation Trusts in the country on 1July 2004. NHS foundation
trusts have greater freedom from central government control and the ability to work with their
community and staff to set local health priorities. We have a well established elected governor’s
council, which is made up of patients, public, staff and partner organisations and works with the
Trust to help set strategic goals and make key decisions.
Our Hospitals
Although the Trust has overall management responsibility for the services provided, our hospitals
each have their own history, which we are rightly proud of. Between them they offer just about
every kind of service available in the modern NHS.
The Northern General is the largest of our hospitals with 1100 beds. Located to the north of the
city, the hospital is spread out over a large site. Amongst the specialist services located there are
orthopaedics, renal, spinal injuries, general surgery and cardiothoracic (heart and lung) services.
Sheffield’s adult accident & emergency department is also based here. A major £30 million stateof-the-art new medical ward development, known as the Sir Robert Hadfield Wing, opened to
patients in April 2007 and a brand new critical care facility, one of the largest in Europe, opened in
2008.
The other Trust hospitals are based closely together on a campus to the west of the city centre; this
is known as the Central Campus.
The Royal Hallamshire is a major acute teaching hospital based around a tower block of 800 beds
and a large outpatient department. The hospital is home to a range of expert specialist services
which include neurosciences, urology, general surgery, breast surgery, dermatology, hearing
services and ophthalmology. The hospital also has a minor injuries unit and an NHS Walk-InCentre for emergency care.
Linked to the Royal Hallamshire by a footbridge, the Jessop Wing is Sheffield’s 216 bed women’s
hospital. Opened in February 2001 it has brought together all of the city’s obstetric, gynaecology
and neonatology services in a state-of-the-art, purpose built, £24 million building. Almost 7000
births take place at the Jessop Wing each year.
Weston Park is one of only three purpose built specialist cancer hospitals in the UK and provides
a full range of non-surgical cancer services to the population of South Yorkshire, North
Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It also enjoys national and international recognition for
certain specific treatments. It has 140 beds and is home to a specialist cancer research centre and
one of the UK’s only teenage cancer units.
The Charles Clifford is a dental teaching hospital linked to The University of Sheffield’s School of
Clinical Dentistry. The hospital provides dental outpatient services and emergency dental services
for the city.
As a teaching trust, all of the hospitals have close links to the University of Sheffield, home to
Sheffield’s medical school, and Sheffield Hallam University – which provides nurse training. It is
a major teaching centre for future health professionals.

1. WESTON PARK HOSPITAL
General Information
Weston Park Hospital is a purpose-built oncology centre, which is the base for the Oncological
Service for South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is one of the major
Radiotherapy Units in the country and is sited in the main hospital area of the city within a
quarter of a mile from the University, the Children’s Hospital, Jessop Hospital for Women and the
Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
There are approximately 3,500 admissions and over 5,000 new patients registered annually. It is a
self-contained unit with 118 beds, 28 of which are of the hostel type.
There is a Diagnostic X-Ray Department with modern apparatus for tumour localisation and
Mould Room facilities are provided in close association to the Simulator Suite and the X-Ray
Therapy Department.
CT Scanning facilities are available at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with a land link for the
Treatment Planning.
In addition to modern radiotherapy there are facilities for major surgery and an expanding
programme of cytotoxic chemotherapy, including stem cell transplantation. The hospital also
houses a large Radiotherapy Physics Department.
Radiotherapy
The radiotherapy equipment is housed in a large Treatment Hall and comprises:
There are Five Varian Linear Accelerators, all with multi-leaf collimators Varian 2100C, two of
them with dual energy linear accelerator (equipped with high energy electron facilities).

There is agreement for two more linear accelerators with dual energy linear accelerator (equipped
with high energy electron facilities in 2004 and the work due to start in 2003.

Pathological Services
Haematology and Histopathology Services are currently provided from Royal Hallamshire
Hospital. A Senior Lecturer in Pathology is the Consultant Pathologist to the hospital.
A service for Chemical Pathology, Bacteriological and other specialised investigations is provided
by the appropriate departments in nearby hospitals.
Phlebotomists are employed for in-patients and out-patients.
Outpatient Services
Outpatient sessions are held in the Out-Patient Department at Weston Park Hospital and there are
consultative clinics in associated hospitals including the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and
Northern General Hospital. Regular clinics are held at Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster,
Mexborough, Retford, Rotherham and Worksop.
Considerable emphasis has been laid on the need for joint consultation in the treatment of
malignant disease and joint operating and/or clinic sessions are held with Consultants in other
specialities including haematology, surgery, endocrinology, dermatology, gynaecology, urology,
paediatrics and ENT.
Chemotherapy
The work of the hospital is directed towards the treatment of malignant disease in its broadest
sense and this includes the comprehensive use of cytotoxic agents and hormones. There is active
participation in Medical Research Council trials and also in the screening of new cytotoxic drugs.
Almost all inpatient chemotherapy is administered by specialist nurses.
Cancer Research Centre
The Cancer Research Centre based at Weston Park Hospital is a purpose built unit where patients
from across North Trent will have access via entry in to clinical trials to new and innovative
treatments in the field of cancer care. A large number of clinical trials are in progress in the
clinical management of, and research in, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, lymphoma, ovarian
cancer, bone metastases, biological therapy of malignant melanoma and renal cell carcinoma,
colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, teratoma and supportive care. A bone densitometer is available
to enable detailed assessment of skeletal changes in patients with and without metastatic bone
disease.
Both the academic and NHS departments at Weston Park Hospital have an active commitment to
national and international multicentre trials with a high profile in British National Lymphoma
Investigation (BNLI), Medical Research Council (MRC) and European Organisation for Research
and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) studies.

2. THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT
Patients are referred to Weston Park Hospital from a population of 1.7 million, which includes
South Yorkshire, and some parts of North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
The work of the department is organised on a “Firm” basis, each firm consisting of 6/7
Consultants with special interests, which may be varied from time to time.
Bed occupancy at Weston Park Hospital is extremely high and the length of stay is often very
short because of the high percentage of patients receiving treatment by cytotoxic chemotherapy.
The workload is steadily increasing in all aspects of oncological practice and there is great
opportunity for development work in the general management of malignancy and in specialised
treatments. Fundamental research is carried out in the Department of Pathology under the
auspices of clinical staff. Many patients have their palliative care needs met at Weston Park
Hospital.
Each firm has at least one theatre list weekly and there are general surgical lists. There are one or
two weekly ward rounds per firm and several for radiation treatment sessions.

University, the Yorkshire Cancer Research Campaign and Trent Regional Health Authority. This

Normally the post involves rotation every three to six months between the various firms in order
to give a broad spectrum of experience but may be varied from time to time according to the
demands of the service. The Trust Grade Doctor works with a Specialist Registrar and is
responsible to 5 to 7 consultants depending upon the particular firm with which he/she is
working. The work involves close contact with all staff and liaison with other departments
including therapeutic and diagnostic radiotherapy, theatre staff, medical physics, pathology,
medical records and social workers.
Support Staff (including nursing, professional and technical staff)
There is a full establishment of nursing staff, radiographers, physicists and physics technicians
(including a Radiotherapy Treatment Impression Suite).
Senior nurses are trained to give chemotherapy, outpatients and in-patients.
DUTIES OF THE POST
Duties consist of responsibility for the day-to-day care of in-patients, including routine clerking
and investigations, minor procedures such as biopsies and paracentesis; the assessment of
patients on cytotoxic therapy and the occasional administration of cytotoxic drugs. There are
usually two major ward rounds per week and one or two outpatient clinics, but this varies from
time to time.
The first on-call rota/shift system is currently under review. Precise details will be sent with your
induction programme.
Teaching, Research and Postgraduate Facilities
Members of staff are encouraged to take advantage of the extensive postgraduate programmes
prepared by the University of Sheffield and this includes courses for candidates wishing to take
MRCP or FRCS.
There is a formal teaching session each week, for the Senior House Officers plus post-graduate
teaching Friday afternoons. An informal MRCP Part II course is run. The hospital has full
accreditation from Trent Regional Task Force with regard to the New Deal.
Accommodation
The appointment requires you to be resident when on-call. Accommodation will be provided on
site when on-call.
Accommodation is extremely limited at Weston Park Hospital. Single accommodation may be
available but this cannot be guaranteed. Accommodation may be available at other sites within
the Trust, but this will depend on availability at the time.
Administration
The out of hours working pattern is prepared by the Senior Specialist Registrar, in co-operation
with Junior Medical Staff.
Location of Duties
Mainly Weston Park Hospital, Whitham Road, Sheffield, S10 2SJ, but attendance at clinics at other
hospitals may be required.

Unforeseen Circumstances
In accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff
(England and Wales) paragraph 110, Junior Doctors shall be expected in the run of their duties,
and within their contract and job description, to cover for the occasional and brief absence of
colleagues as far as is practicable.
4. STUDY AND TRAINING
Postgraduate Training
“Trent region is committed to developing postgraduate training programmes for both general and
higher professional training as laid down by Colleges and Faculties, and by the Postgraduate
Dean’s network. At local level, college/specialty tutors work with unit postgraduate clinical
tutors in supervising these programmes. Trainees will be expected to take part in these
programmes (including audit) and to attend counselling sessions/professional review. Study
leave will form part of these educational programmes and will be arranged in conjunction with
the appropriate tutor”.
Study Leave
Study leave for local courses is usually granted, subject to the maintenance of the service and in
accordance with the recommended allowance.
Library Facilities
A comprehensive Oncological Library is available at Weston Park Hospital with up-to-date
specialist books and current journals, including a CD ROM Information System, and there are
excellent lending, reference and National Lending Library (Boston Spa) facilities at the Royal
Hallamshire Hospital where the University Medical Library is housed.
5. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The appointment is subject to:a) The terms and conditions of service for Hospital Medical and Dental staff (England and
Wales).
b) Satisfactory registration with the General Medical Council (London).
c) Medical fitness - If invited for interview, you will be required to provide evidence of
immunity to Hepatitis ‘B’. You may also be required to undergo a medical examination and
chest X-ray.
Commitments arising under these provisions are, however, exceptional and practitioners should
not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
Smoking at Work
On 1 July 1994 Weston Park Hospital and its grounds became totally smoke free. The only
exception to this policy is small areas set aside for in-patients who are unable or unwilling to give
up the habit during their stay.

HEALTH CLEARANCE & MEDICAL EXAMINATION
This appointment is subject to medical fitness and the appointee may be required to undergo a
medical examination and chest X-ray.
Potential applicants should be aware of the Department of Health and GMC/GDC requirements
with regard to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses.
Candidates are advised that they will be asked at interview whether they are aware of anything
preventing them from fulfilling their professional commitments and this includes health.
The successful candidate must be immune to Hepatitis ‘B’ and Tuberculosis. They will be
required to provide, in advance of appointment, evidence of immunity or have a local blood test
(as deemed appropriate by the Occupational Health Department).
Salary
The current nationally agreed salary scales for Senior House Officer is payable.
The starting salary will be determined by previous service in accordance with current nationally
agreed salary scales for Senior House Officers. Any future nationally agreed pay awards for
Senior House Officers will apply. There is no guarantee however that this post/salary will be
recognised for incremental credit purposes on entry/re-entry to a training programme.
Notification of Termination of Employment
Trust Doctors are required to give a minimum of one month’s notice of termination of their
employment.
Health and Safety
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, of which Weston Park Hospital is a part, recognise their
duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure, as far as it is reasonably practical,
the health, safety and welfare at work of all its employees and in addition the business of the
Trust shall be conducted so as to ensure that patients, their relatives, contractors, voluntary
workers, visitors and members of the public having access to Trust premises and the facilities are
not exposed to risk to their health and safety.
All medical and dental staff under contract will be expected to comply with Trust Health and
Safety policies.
Registration
Satisfactory registration with the General Medical Council (London).
Use of Information Technology
Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, any individual who knowingly attempts to gain
unauthorised access or modifies any programmes or data held in a computer which they are
unauthorised to do, is liable under the Act. If found guilty of these offences the individual may be
prosecuted. The person would also be subject to disciplinary action which may result in
dismissal.
Similarly in accordance with UK copyright law, any person involved in the illegal reproduction of
software or who make, acquire or use unauthorised copies of computer software will be subject to
disciplinary action which may lead to dismissal.

Junior Doctor’s Monitoring Hours
In accordance with HSC 1998/240 and HSC 2000/031 Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are
committed to monitoring the hours worked by junior doctors. In accordance with Health Service
Circular 2000/031 junior doctors have a contractual obligation to monitor hours on request; this
will include participation in local monitoring exercises at Directorate level and Sheffield Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust junior doctors hours screening exercise undertaken twice yearly.
