The second meeting of the 2015/16 session will be held in Lecture Theatre 1, Glasgow Dental Hospital
and School on Tuesday 17th November 2015 at 7.00pm.

“What I have learned from a lifetime in Microbiology. Man and Microbe – an Uneasy
Relationship”

Jeremy Bagg qualified BDS (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh in 1979. He was subsequently
appointed to a Leckie-Mactier Research Fellowship in the Department of Bacteriology at Edinburgh
Medical School and was awarded a PhD in 1982. From 1983 – 1991 he was Lecturer in Oral Medicine &
Oral Pathology at Cardiff Dental School. In 1991 he moved to the University of Glasgow, where he is
now Professor of Clinical Microbiology, Head of the Dental School and Deputy Head of the School of
Medicine.
His research interests are in the role of oral micro-organisms in systemic disease, oral infections in the
medically compromised, infection control in dental surgery and public health microbiology. He is coauthor of two textbooks and has published in excess of 170 papers
This presentation will illustrate how scientific developments in our understanding and
management of infectious diseases can result in significant societal impacts and challenges.
It will describe the stark reality of the risks to humans posed by antimicrobial drug resistance
and illustrate the public health challenges of infectious diseases, explore the evolving challenges
and discuss what works well and what doesn’t. It will look at the past, the present and future prospects
for the world of dentistry.
Registration is from 6.30pm. Entry is via the Glasgow Dental Education Centre and tea and coffee will
be served in the Glasgow Dental Education Centre from 6.30pm before the meeting.
