Applications are invited for the post of part-time (4 PA) Specialty Dentist in Oral
Surgery at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. The hospital has close links with
both the Glasgow University Dental School and the Regional Maxillofacial Unit.
This post is suitable for applicants with specialist registration or for those wishing to
develop skills in this field. The successful candidate will gain wide experience in Oral
Surgery.
Applicants will be required to have full registration with the General Dental Council,
have passed all parts of FDS or MFDS examinations by the time of taking up the post
and should be a minimum of 4 years post graduation with a minimum of 2 years full
time experience in Oral Surgery. Working days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

1. Glasgow and the Surrounding Area
Glasgow, with a population of around 1.2 Million, is Scotland’s largest city, and
one of Europe’s liveliest with a varied and colourful social and cultural life that can
cater for every taste.
Glasgow is a city of contrasts; the bustle of a major commercial and business
centre, the greenery of parks and gardens, and a wealth of art galleries,
museums, cinemas and theatres. Newcomers quickly feel at home in this vibrant
and friendly city. Of particular note is the University’s Hunterian Museum that is
the oldest public museum in Scotland. The Hunterian Art Gallery has important
art collections and contains a reconstruction of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s own
house.
Glasgow has an extensive road and rail public transport system with one of the
largest commuter rail networks outside London and its own underground railway,
the ‘subway’, which serves the University and the centre of the city.
In 2014 Glasgow hosted to the Commonwealth Games confirming its place as a
centre of sporting excellence.
2. Oral Health Directorate
The Oral Health Directorate is contained within the East Dunbartonshire
Integrated Health and Social care Partnership and comprises a single NHSGGC
Board wide organisation structure incorporating:

3. The Glasgow Dental Hospital and School
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is
part of the Oral Health Directorate structure and is the main referral centre for
specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and
Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health
Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000 people.
The total number of chairs within the Hospital and School is approximately 160. In
addition there is an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a 10 minute walk away. There are
strong links with the University of Glasgow and other hospitals in the region and
there is an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities.
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School comprises the following clinical
departments:







All departments hold regular Clinical Governance and Audit meetings.
Dental Staff Association meets regularly.
The
The Dental School delivers a modern, integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery
(BDS) programme over five years to an undergraduate population of
approximately 500 students. The course has been very highly ranked in recent
league tables. Oral Medicine is within the Biological & Medical Sciences (BAMS)
Section. BDS 4 and 5 students are present on every Oral Medicine clinic and the
post holder would be expected to play an active role in clinical teaching.
Taught postgraduate programmes are offered in Restorative Dentistry, Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics.
Post graduate research opportunities are provided, within the three main
research themes within the University of Glasgow Dental School: Infection and
Immunity, Community Oral Health and Biotechnology and Craniofacial Science.

The Department of Oral Surgery
The Department of Oral Surgery is currently situated on Levels 3 and 4 of the
Glasgow Dental Hospital. There is a consultant clinic on Level 3 with 7
chairs/consulting rooms. The Minor Oral Surgery Procedures Clinic has 5
chairs and is also located on level 3. It provides facilities for a variety of
dentoalveolar procedures, carried out under local anaesthesia and this area is
the main focus of student clinical teaching activity. Further Minor Oral
Surgery, including implantology and local bone grafting is carried out under
both local anaesthesia and sedation in the theatre facility on Level 4. There
are 4 chairs and a spacious recovery area in this facility. A recent major
redesign and refurbishment of the clinical facilities has delivered an
outstanding clinical environment.
There are Day Surgery facilities at Stobhill Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary
both located in recently built Ambulatory Care Hospitals (ACH’s) offering
excellent up-to-date facilities.
There is no inpatient operating associated with this post and no out of hours
on-call commitment.
5.
The Post
There is 1 post available amounting to 0.4 WTE in total. The post holder must
be able to contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Oral Surgery
Department including provision of treatment under sedation and should have
experience of provision of sedation. The post holder would be expected to
function largely independently. The post holder should have been qualified in
dentistry for at least 4 years with 2 years experience in Oral Surgery and
should possess a membership or fellowship from one of the Royal Colleges at
the time of taking up the post. Inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Oral
Surgery would be an advantage.
There is no inpatient operating associated with this post although occasional
joint management of surgical cases with OMFS colleagues takes place at the
Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
There is no out of hours on call commitment.

The above staffing levels reflect the staffing position within Oral Surgery at
the time this job description was compiled. Staffing levels will change to meet
future service and business priorities. It would be desirable for the postholder to have a sub-specialty interest. The post-holder/s may, under certain
circumstances, be expected to adjust his/her commitments from time to time
in agreement with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director in order to
accommodate variations in service needs. The job plan will be subject to
regular review.
8.
Relationships with other departments
Good relationships exist with all departments in the Dental Hospital and with
the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
9.
Teaching & Research
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is an important component of the
department and the holder of this post will be expected to take part in clinical
undergraduate teaching and clinical assessment. We have several rotational
SHOs and DFTs in the department and the post holder(s) would be involved
in aspects of their training. Research opportunities exist for those interested
however research would not form an essential past of these posts. Excellent
library facilities are available within Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and
the University.
10.
Clinical Audit
The post holder will be expected to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit
Programme. Regular audit meetings are held within the Dental Hospital and
School; these are an essential component of Clinical Governance.
11.
Timetable
The post will include clinical sessions and SPA time on a pro rata 9 (clinical):1
(SPA) split. Duties undertaken will include the full range of oral surgery. An
indicative job plan is attached, this may change depending on the demands of
the service but the days the post holder would work are likely to remain the
same.

Other Duties
The post holder will be asked to assist in undergraduate teaching and or
continuing education according to experience. The post holder may be
expected to deputise for absent colleagues.

Administration
Administrative duties include those associated with the care of patients and the
running of the department. The post holder will be expected to undertake some
management duties as directed by the Lead Clinician. There is a requirement to
work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the Directorate.
14.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital
and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the
salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid
monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION
New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but
under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS
Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made

REMOVAL EXPENSES
Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be
discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
