Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program
The Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program (MLCP)
at the Lucille P. Markey Cancer Center provides a
multidisciplinary approach to care for patients with
thoracic cancers (cancers of the lung and chest).
Established in 1998 as the first multidisciplinary lung
cancer program in Kentucky, our goal is to facilitate
a rapid diagnosis for patients and provide innovative
treatment, prevention and screening of lung cancer.
Clinical Cancer Care
Provide diagnosis and treatment for small and non-small
cell lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymoma, esophageal,
bronchial carcinoid and other thoracic cancers
We stress a multidisciplinary approach to care: each
patient is assessed by a team of oncologists, surgeons,
radiologists, nurses and other specialists who collaborate
to develop an individualized treatment plan – ensuring
optimal patient care
MLCP is the first program in Kentucky to offer a
dedicated interventional pulmonology service and
endobronchial ultrasound for diagnosis and staging of
lung cancer
MLCP is the only program to offer a multidisciplinary
approach to the management of central airway
obstruction
UK Markey Cancer Center offers radiation medicine
treatment at UK Hospital as well as in 5 communities
in the region. Radiation medicine treatment facilities
provide care close to home and are located in Morehead,
Maysville, Berea, Georgetown, and Mt. Sterling
We offer a centralized clinic where patients are evaluated
and treated
MLCP offers cutting-edge research and the opportunity
for patients to participate in clinical trials
MLCP is the first program in the region to provide a true
multidisciplinary approach to lung cancer care
Each new patient’s case is discussed in a weekly
case review conference which is attended by all team
physicians
Patient clinical evaluations are available on Monday and
Thursday
Additional information available at the MLCP Web site:
We work in conjunction with Kentucky Neuroscience and
Orthopaedics Center. This Center is comprised of nationallyrenowned experts in the treatment of lung cancers that are
metastatic to the brain and offers state-of-the-art treatment
using steroetactic radiosurgery and other novel therapies
for this devastating complication of lung cancer
Specialized procedures are performed including
endobronchial implanted radiation, photodynamic
therapy, laser surgery, pleuroscopy, autofluroescent
bronchoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery

(combining radiation and chemotherapy) for locally
advanced disease, novel chemotherapeutic and
biologic agents and vaccine therapy after treatment
Regional and National Role
