9th ANNUAL La MaMa INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM FOR
DIRECTORS in Umbria, Italy
June 29 – July 13, 2008 – Symposium Session One
July 14 – July 28, 2008 – Symposium Session Two
La MaMa Umbria International, Spoleto, Italy
The International Symposium for Directors, sponsored by La MaMa Umbria
is a training program for professional directors, choreographers and actors.
Internationally renowned theatre artists conduct workshops and
lecture/demonstrations.
Participants will be exposed to a variety of theatrical perspectives during the
Symposium, from instructors who will expand their sense of what is possible in
the theatre. Directors attending the Symposium see how prominent artists on the
international scene create their unique productions. The workshops are
participatory, and it is expected that all attendees will engage actively in the
processes of the various teaching artists. This summer, we host the following
artists:

Patrick Acogny (Senegal/France) “Directing Through Movement”
Tina Landau (USA) “Visual Literacy”
Naum Panovski (Macedonia) “Collaboration and Aesthetics”
Federico Restrepo (Colombia) “Puppetry and Visual Theatre”
Session Two:
Meng Jinghui (China) “Avant-Garde Chinese Theatre”
Lois Weaver/Peggy Shaw (USA) “Radical Independent Performance”
Joel Zwick (USA) “Directing the Actor –Creating an Ensemble”
Tina Landau (USA) “Visual Literacy”
All artists are confirmed at press time, but are subject to change
Space is limited. Registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registrants must fill out the registration form and return it to us by April 15, 2008

2nd ANNUAL La MaMa INTERNATIONAL PLAYWRIGHT RETREAT in
Umbria, Italy
JULY 31 – AUGUST 11, 2008
Artist-in-Residence: NAOMI IIZUKA
Playwrights will enjoy ten
days living and writing in
the Umbrian countryside at
La MaMa Umbria
International, Ellen
Stewart’s artist residence
in Italy. During the week
participants will have
ample time to work on new
or existing material. Each
day, Artist-in-Residence
Naomi Iizuka will meet with
the playwrights to
facilitate discussions,
workshops and exercises
designed to help the writer
with whatever challenges
they are facing. Group
readings are also possible
and feedback if requested
by the playwright. Much
time is reserved for
writing and quiet
reflection in the tranquil
surroundings.
The Symposium and Retreat
are fully accredited
programs of Sarah Lawrence
College (2 credits for the
Symposium and 1 credit for
the Retreat.) For more

STORIES, LANGUAGE OF ANGELS,
WAR OF THE WORLDS (a
collaboration with Anne
Bogart and SITI Company),
ALOHA, SAY THE PRETTY GIRLS,
TATTOO GIRL and SKIN. Her
play AFTER A HUNDRED YEARS
will premiere at the Guthrie
Theater in Minneapolis in
Spring 2008 and her play
GHOSTWRITTEN will premiere at
the Goodman Theater in
Chicago in Spring 2009. She
is a member of New Dramatists
and the recipient of a
PEN/Laura Pels Award, an
Alpert Award, a Joyce
Foundation Award, a Whiting
Writers’ Award, a Stavis
Award from the National
Theatre Conference, a
Rockefeller Foundation MAP
grant, an NEA/TCG Artist in
Residence grant, a McKnight
Fellowship, a PEN Center USA
West Award for Drama,
Princeton University’s Hodder
Fellowship, and a Jerome
Fellowship. She is the head
of the graduate MFA
Playwriting program at the
University of California, San
Diego.
