Essay Contest
Essay Topic:
Described as ‘the most important idea to occur to the human
mind’, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural
selection, published in The Origin of Species in 1859, caused a
revolution in science and society.
Explain why Darwin’s views remain so important today.
Prizes:
•Books provided by the Oklahoma University Press and Chicago University
Press
•Cash prizes from Sigma Xi
•Invitations to tour the History of Science Collection at OU and to be
photographed holding a first edition copy of the Origin of Species

Deadline: Extended to October 2, 2009!
Maximum Length: 500 words
Submit essays to: [email protected]
Open to all college students in the state of Oklahoma and all high school
students in the Norman Independent School District.
Essays will be judged on originality and quality of writing by a panel consisting
of individuals selected by the Darwin 2009 Steering Committee.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony on the 150th anniversary of the
publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species in November 2009.
