CELLULAR RESPIRATION
“Spendable Energy”
Cellular Respiration
Chemical process that releases ATP energy
from food energy.
 Happens in the mitochondria of cells.


C6H12O6 + O2 

(glucose)
CO2 + H2O

Food contains energy

Burrito: protein, carbohydrates, lipids
Proteins  amino acids  ATP
 Carbs  simple sugars  ATP
 Lipids  glycerol/fatty acids  ATP


ATP is the raw, usable energy that cells can
use to function and live.
Calories
Energy that we obtain from food is
measured in calories.
 1 calorie = amount of energy needed to
raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree C.
 Our food packages show kilocalories (or
Calories) = 1000 calories.
 A peanut (5 Cal) will burn to yield enough
energy to raise 1000 g of water by 5
degrees.

Steps in Respiration






1. Glycolysis -- glucose is broken in half.
(if oxygen is present) 2. Krebs Cycle – carbon
dioxide is produced from broken glucose.
(if oxygen is present) 3. Electron Transport Chain
-- large amount of ATP is produced.
(“aerobic”)
(if no oxygen) 2. Lactic acid fermentation.
(“anaerobic”)
-- OR -(if no oxygen) 2. Alcoholic fermentation.
