concepts addressed in Unit 1: Chemistry of Life.

PROPERTIES OF WATER BOOKLET
AP Biology Summer Assignment
INSTRUCTIONS:
You will construct a booklet that illustrates the key properties of water. Your goal is to demonstrate that
water is essential to biological systems and that the properties of water are observable in everyday life.
Your task is to take your own photographs that illustrate water’s properties and their importance. You
will need to use one object/figurine to appear in every picture to demonstrate authenticity. You must
describe each property and explain how your photograph demonstrates the property.
All work must be handwritten (NOT typed) and in complete sentences. You may use any paper, though
card stock or construction paper is recommended. Your booklet may be of any size; however, keep in
mind that it should be small enough to fit neatly in your binder and be large enough to fit pictures,
descriptions and explanations.
You will be tested on this material during the month of September. Be creative and do your best as this
booklet will be your study guide for the test. While each booklet will cover the same content, they will
all be unique to the student creating it!

AP Biology Summer Assignment
INSTRUCTIONS:
The molecules of life are an important concept in AP Biology as they are the foundation of all living
organisms. This foldable will serve as a study tool for your unit test in September and will highlight
some of the key ideas that you should know for each of the macromolecules.
Your task is to take your own photographs that illustrate the four macromolecules and answer the bullets
pertaining to each molecule. You will need to use one object/figurine to appear in every picture to
demonstrate authenticity. Be creative and do your best.
All work must be handwritten, NOT typed. You can bullet and list your answers.
You will need a manila folder and two pieces of plain white paper. On the front of the manila folder,
create a title for the assignment. Also include your first and last name along with the class period.
Fold and cut one piece of paper as shown below to make a 4 tab foldable.
FRONT SIDE OF TABS:
1. Include the name of the macromolecule.
2. Take a picture for each macromolecule. Use your object of authenticity.

1. Take a picture that demonstrates nucleic acids. Use your object of authenticity.
2. Identify the elements that make up nucleic acids.
3. The monomer for nucleic acids is a nucleotide. Draw and label the components of a nucleotide.
4. Identify the two types of nucleic acids and their roles in heredity. Compare their structures.
5. Identify the nitrogenous bases found in both types of nucleic acids.
Take the foldable and paste it into the manila folder on the left hand side.

On your second sheet of white paper include the paragraph and reactions below.
Chapter 4 Carbon and the Diversity of Life
Write a brief paragraph explaining how the chemical structure of the carbon atom has allowed for such
diversity of organisms on Earth.
Chapter 5 Synthesis and Breakdown of Polymers
1. Write the terms DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS and HYDROLYSIS.
2. Use your textbook to help you define and explain the terms.
3. Use your textbook as a guide to draw pictures (do not print) showing the following examples:
a) Draw the condensation reaction for joining 2 amino acids to form a dipeptide.
b) Draw a hydrolysis reaction of a disaccharide.
Paste this sheet of paper into the manila folder on the right hand side.
