Traceably measuring dc current is
SIMPLE!
•
•
•
•
•
Connect a resistor of known value
Allow source and resistor to settle
Measure the voltage developed
Calculate & record the current
Estimate uncertainties
• Voltmeter specification
(characterization)
• Resistor value, stability & power
coefficient
• Contribution for noise
• Move on to the next
measurement
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
I=V/R
3
Traceably measuring ac current is....
• Connect a resistor (calibrated
for ac/dc difference)
• Measure +dc current with shunt
• Repeat for –dc current
• Average the two dc
measurements
• Measure ac current
• Apply corrections
• Determine total error
• Consider uncertainties
• Calculate & record the current
• Move on to the next
measurement & repeat
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
SIMPLE
I=calculated by comparing the
average of (+Idc & -Idc) to Iac
4
Fluke’s solution – the original A40 shunts
the long time industry standard solution....
Since 1963 we have
compared AC to DC using
thermal devices – a time
consuming & complex task
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
5
Can we make it easier?
• Products like Fluke 792A
and 5790A remove some
AC-DC measurement
difficulties
• BUT.... we still need to
perform AC-DC
comparison
• What is needed to make
AC current measurements
as simply as DC?
A better transducer…
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
6
Introducing the better transducer …
A40B Precision Current Shunts
14 shunts
ranging from
1 mA to 100 A
DC to 100 kHz
Output @
nominal
current of 0.8V
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
7
Why the A40B Shunts are better •
Specified to measure both DC and AC current
A40s and A40As were AC only
•
Accurate enough to measure current directly
rather than use AC/DC transfer techniques
Simplifies calibration to 1/3 of the complexity of the
existing methodology
•
Low inductance and low power coefficients
permit
Improved measurement speed (less self heating)
Little phase shift for calibration of power quality
instruments (like the Fluke 6100A)
•
Extends precision currents shunts beyond 20A,
to both a 50A and a 100A level
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
8
Radial shunt design –
(100 mA & higher shunts)
A design used
and accepted by
many NMIs
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
9
A40B Shunt output voltage – 0.8 Volts
Easy to measure, and are
compatible with
• Precision DMMs (Fluke 8508A)
• Sampling DMMs (Agilent 3458)
• AC Measurement Standards
(Fluke 5790A)
• AC/DC Transfer Standards
(Fluke 792A)
• Traditional Thermal Voltage
Converters (TVCs and
MJTVCs)
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
10
The A40B 1 mA Shunt –
Designed to minimize loading effects
• 1 mA shunt is 800  for a 0.8V output
• Technical Issues for 800 ohm shunts
• Shunt resistance interacts with DMM
input impedance
• 10 M  reduces resistance by 80 ppm
• Connecting cables add capacitance &
inductance – effecting bandwidth & phase
shift
• 90 pF reduces resistance by 430 ppm @
100 kHz
• So the A40B 1 mA shunt has a built
in battery operated buffer amplifier to
minimize these effects
• Reduce output resistance from 800 ohms
to 8 milliohms
• Rechargeable battery operation
eliminates power mains related errors

Calibrate Fluke 5520A calibrator
current with A40B & 8508A DMM
• Enter the shunt calibrated resistance
value into 8508A memory
• Connect 5520A → shunt → DVM
• 5520A to operate & the current is
displayed on dmm, scaled to amps
• Record; move on to next
measurement
• Excellent Test Uncertainty Ratio
(TUR) for AC and DC current
• (Fluke plans to update our
documented procedures in 2009)
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
15
Calibrate Fluke 5720A calibrator
current with A40B & Fluke 5790A
DC current
• A40B + 8508A will provide
an excellent TUR for all
currents
• Alternatively, Fluke 742A
can be used as DC resistors
up to 2 A for a more
accurate calibration
AC current
• Use A40B + 5790A (manual
resistor value correction)
• TUR better than AC-DC
transfer using older A40 &
A40A shunts (≥4:1)
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
Can use A40B shunts
for both AC & DC tests
Use a DMM as a DC detector,
5790A as an AC detector
16
Calibrate power quality sources
A40B type shunts are best for this application
•
•
•
•
Low inductance
Low power coefficient
High bandwidth
6100 specs and TUR
requirements require a
spec < 0.05 mº at 50Hz
from current shunts for
calibration
• A40B phase displacement
not discernable @ 50 Hz;
<< 1 º @ 1500 Hz

Fluke’s 6100A
Calibration/Verification System
Fluke’s Digital
Sampling
Wattmeter
• Note the green AC current
shunts, these are A40B
prototypes
• It would not have been possible
to achieve the calibration
uncertainties required for phase
angle and non-sinusoidal signals
without a superb AC shunt

Calibrate transconductance amplifiers
• Guildline 7620:
• 200 A to 20 A, DC to
100 kHz;
TUR > 4:1
• Clarke-Hess 8100:
• 200 mA to 100 A; DC to
100 kHz; TUR > 4:1
• Ballantine 1620A
• 1 mA to 100 A, DC to 10
kHz; TUR > 4:1

A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
22
A40B Competitors
• Guildline’s Elusive New
Precision AC Shunt series
• Custom Shunts supplied by
various NMIs
• Sweden’s SP Shunts
• Norway’s JV Shunts
• Austrian shunts
• NMIs who build their own shunts
• Fluke’s A40 & A40A shunts
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
23
Guildline 7340 Series of
Precision AC Shunts
• Based on an older design
• Requires external cooling
fans
• Lesser performing specs than
A40Bs
• New to market & unproven
• Shown at CPEM 2008 &
NCSLI, but had markedly less
interest vs. A40Bs
• Not promoted on the web site
• Pricing unknown
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
24
SP Shunts (Sweden’s NMI)
• Based on the original “squirrel
cage” design from Japan &
Russia, now used for the A40B
• SP has sold these shunts for a
number of years
• Fluke owns a set as the
metrology standards used for
Fluke’s 6100As
• Now SP has an improved design
to 100A with low ac/dc difference
• Costly to purchase, essentially
“hand made”
• Future support is ad hoc
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
25
Norway’s JV Shunts
• Experimental Shunts
• Better performance for
AC/DC difference
• Very limited current range:
• 30 mA to 100 mA
• Potentially better bandwidth
to 1 MHz
• Probably only available to
other NMIs
• Difficult to repeatedly
manufacture
A40B Product Sales Training - Jan '09
26
Fluke A40 & A40A Shunts
• Current Shunt of choice:
many thousands are used
throughout the world
• Written into all Fluke
calibration procedures
• Well known and
understood
• Difficult to use (3 times
more complex of a
measurement process vs.
A40Bs)

Other Sales Oriented FAQs
• Will the A40 and A40A cease to available?
• No firm plans at this time, but they will be phased out in the future
• Will Fluke published cal procedures for existing
calibrators be upgraded to use A40B’s rather than the
older A40s and A40As?
• Yes, we anticipate that will be done in 2009
• Can A40Bs be used for AC/DC transfer measurements?
• Yes, their cal certs calibrate their AC/DC difference and
customers can use this as they would their earlier versions of
A40 shunts. It can improve uncertainties.

FAQs
• Why is the output at 0.8 volts when the 792A range is
700mV?
• This output level is optimum for digital sampling wattmeter
applications using the 3458 on the 1V range – providing a peak
measurement at just under 1.2 volts.
• Most applications will be done by direct measurement of the
shunt voltage using DMMs.
• It is acceptable to calibrate 792A at the 0.4 volt calibration point
for AC/DC transfer measurements.
