Learning Plan / Design Document Course Number and Name: BIO121 General Biology Unit 13: Evidence of Evolution Code E = Engage I = Interact P = Perform E = Engage Overview and Essential Question(s) Welcome to Unit 13. This week we will learn about the different types of scientific evidence that exist that supports the theory of evolution. We will learn about the different types of fossils and why transitional specimens are so crucial. We’ll discuss biogeography and how that can be used to explain the evolution of a species. We will also compare anatomy of seemingly unrelated species and discover how many similarities exist. Finally, we will describe embryonic development patterns among different organisms and also how the similarity of biological molecules show support to the theory of evolution. Essential Questions What types of information are used to determine how species are related to one another? Why are transitional fossils especially useful for understanding evolutionary relationships? Why are vestigial structures are important to evolutionary biology? E = Engage Performance Objectives I = Interact Multimedia Lectures and Materials Describe attributes that can be used to determine evolutionary relatedness in species. (13.1-5) Explain why hard body parts are more likely to appear in the fossil record. (13.1) Describe two ways that the age of a fossil can be determined. (13.1) Explain how biogeography can be used to explain the evolution of a species. (13.2) Compare and contrast homologous, analogous, and vestigial structures. (13.3) Explain how embryonic development can be used to identify evolutionary relationships. (13.4) Describe how DNA sequences can reveal evolutionary relatedness. (13.5) Explain what is meant by a molecular clock. (13.5) Powerpoint video Animations I = Interact P = Perform Activities and Assignments Assessments Read the chapter from your textbook, and then review the lecture presentation associated with this chapter. View the animations that go along with this chapter. Complete the discussion board question for this chapter (graded). You will need to submit your first post to the discussion board question by Wednesday at 11:59pm EST, and also post throughout the week (minimum post on 3 separate days of the week).
