The tragedy of war is there, but also, a lot of humor and comradeship as five women of Calgary kept the home fires burning in spite of doubts, loneliness and pain. The play opens with a young girl, Estella, pregnant and alone, collecting dirt samples and checking on the roots that dangle in, which will signal life above. She’s recently lost her love, Leopold, who went up in order to sacrifice himself to preserve resources for others—just as the explorer Robert Scott did in the famous Terra Nova Expedition of Antarctica in 1910. As she waits for the roots to regenerate, for microbes and nematodes and worms to reappear, she teaches herself the history, science, and mythology of dirt. She is running out of time: her baby has turned, the bunker walls are collapsing, her lab-grown food is low, and she is losing her sanity. When she re-emerges above earth in Act II—into Terra Nova—she finds herself in the old theatre, and what she discovers is stunning.
