Laboratory Requirements:
This Human Anatomy lab is designed to get hands-on experience with anatomical
models and structures. You will be responsible for identifying every structure on the lab
checklists. We will have 3 lab exams throughout the semester. These exams will consist of
identifying various structures on models and pictures.
Required Materials:
 Structure list—bring the structure “checklist” to each lab period. You can write
memory tricks and notes next to structures as we learn them in lab. Each checklist
will last 3-4 weeks before you will take an exam. I will provide new checklists after
each of the 3 exams.
 Cat dissection tools—we will provide you with scalpels, dissection trays, probes, and
pins. Please respect these materials and handle your cats with care.
Learning Outcomes of the Biology Major
1.
Demonstrate proficiency in the language and terminology of biology and
effectively communicate biological knowledge, and ideas.
2.
Exhibit knowledge of the basic structures, fundamental processes and relationships of
life at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels.
3.
Find and evaluate various types of scientific information such as quantitative data,
qualitative data, and that found within research journals, mass media, and the worldwide web.
4.
Demonstrate proficiency of basic lab techniques and use of scientific instrumentation.
Learning Outcomes of the Exercise Science Major
A.
Demonstrate competency in health and fitness testing, and measurement of individuals.
B.
Appropriately assess, design and implement fitness programs for all individuals.
C.
Formulate a personal philosophy of wellness consisting of a balanced, holistic outlook,
including Christian ethics, as applied to the field of Exercise Science.
D.
Begin to interpret appropriate research and apply it to the practice of Exercise Science.
Course Objectives (with major learning outcomes in parentheses)
By the end of this course, you should be able to do the following:

Explain the organization of the human body using appropriate anatomical terminology
(1, 2, A)
•
Explain development of organ systems from embryo to fully-developed human (1, 2, A)
•
Identify significant anatomical structures of the various organ systems of the human
body (1, 2, A)
•
Show competency with dissection of a mammal (4)
In Lab Each Week:
The first half of lab will consist of learning anatomical structures on 2D models (using
PowerPoint slides and various pictures). The second half of lab will be group work, getting
hand-on experience with the models, bones, and cats.
Grading:
Your lab grade will consist of 75 points, with each lab exam being 25 points.
(25 points x 3 lecture exams =75 total points). This will be included in your total point score for
your entire Anatomy grade.
Attendance:
You are required to come to each lab period. In case of an emergency situation, you
may attend the other lab section available (either Mondays at 6:30pm or Tuesdays at 8:00am).
Please see me first. You will not be allowed to make up lab exams.
