Essay one: Oral communication
Form the beginning, human kinds always find a way to communicate with each other
using verbal or physical communications. One of the techniques of communication used by the
people in the prehistoric period was oral communication. Oral communication is a process that
involves memorization and verbal skills where people were able to transmit information and
ideas from one individual or group to another. Although oral communication uses verbal skills to
communicate, oral communicate is not similar to verbal communication. Verbal communication
is a technique of communication where a person uses word structured method to communicate.
Oral communications uses a sounds, body gestures, and preservation to communicate. Some of
the example of oral communications that was used during the prehistoric period were
storytelling, smoke signal, drum signal, and singing. The main goal of oral communication is to
establish a sense of communication and to promote the spread of cultures and religions
throughout the generation.
Storytelling is an oral communication where people were able to spread the knowledge of
culture, religion, myth, legends, and personal experience to other group. Storytelling was
introduce before the creation of a writing system where people would gather together and
communication with each other. In storytelling during the pre-historical period, it had no
coordination with any form of written language. This is one of the big differences between the
storytelling during the pre-historical and present period. In storytelling, there are storytellers and
audiences. The storyteller is a person who is delivering the story and the audiences are the people
who is actively listening and gathering information from the storyteller. There are various ways
where a story can be presented, some of these ways are by dancing, singing, picture or graphical
images, and physical objects (such as animals or natural objects). In some case, a story have
combination of the both singing and dancing. As Storytelling.net stated “Another approach of

storytelling is a theme can be big enough to be a plot element” [Storytellingday.net], which
meant that a story can be presend with a sight deviation in many different stories. There are
different kinds of storytelling examples that helped human civilatization evolve from the prehistorical periods to modern periods. Pansori was one of the example of oral communication that
was used in the South East Asisa. Pansori was created by Korean where they have used singing,
dancing, and msuic to express and presnt cultures and religions to other people in the regon of
Korea.
Pansori is a from of storytelling where it involues the music and dance components of
oral communications. Pansori is a musical storytelling where the word Pamsori is divided up to
two different means. The word “Pan” means “ a place where many people gather” and “sori”
means a “song” (Pansori epic chant). In Pansori there are two people who plays a variable roles,
the singer and the musican. the singer is a vocalist who holds a tranditional paper fan and
delivers the story by a meaning of a song. The drumer is the musican who plays an old
tranditional korean instrunment call the buk. In pansori, the vocalist delivers the story by the
meaning of sori (sound), Aniri (narriation), and ballim (mimetic gestur). Those are the techqiues
the vocalist uses to orally translate and tell the audience about the story’s plot, setting, and
charaters. The vocalist also uses various sounds in their story where individual to characterize
certain events. For example, the vocalist uses are different pitch when decribing ghosts, spiritual
creatures, animals, and humans. The drum provides the vocalist with the rhythm for the story.
Pansori give the audience with the sense of emotional and spiritual feeling during the
performance. Pansori is one of the traditional communication that cannot be writing down in a

piece of paper because of the unique aspects of the styles and how the story is sung1. Pansori is
only can be told by a vocalist and that the only way the people were able to obtain the story.
History of Pansori started during the Joseon period (1392 – 1910) where Pansori was
used in the uppera nd lower classes. Both upper and lower class had different syles and meaning
where Pansori was told. In the lower class, Pansori was used to spread the culture of individual
family history and knowledge to their children. In the upperclass, Pansori was used for the spead
of culture and knowledge to the future generation. At the same time, Pansori was used to
entertain the nobles and royal familes. Pansori was a communication skill that was pass down
from one person to another by teaching the vocal styles and skills. Pansori was tought mainly to
children. In the noble house, Noble female children were trained to obtain the perfect pansori
voice and style. The trainnies are put into harsh training where they practice everyday and they
are tested by the instructor. The last test the trainnies undergo was the waterfall test. The water
fall test was for the trainnies to overpower the sound of the waterfall with their Pansori voice.
Dring the Japanses occupcation of Korea, the practice of Pansori storytelling have decreased due
to the Japaneses rulership and weaten culture movements. During the occupcation, Korean were
considered as the lower class to the Japanese. The Japanese emperor promoted Japanese culture
and religions to the Korean. Where Korean cultures were criticize by the japanese including
Pansori. Althought during occupcation, Korean still practiced their cultures and religions. During
the occipcations, there where various of songs that was developed to express the life of Korea
during the Japanese occupcation of Korea. During the Korean war, Pansori tradition have
suffered from the separtion of North and South Korean. Due to the separion of people where
pansori singers were separated from each other and the decrease of education during the war

time. Even through there weren’t many people learning or practicing Pansori, people still used
Pansori to tell stories and varity of songs where created as well. Pansori was used in the frontline
of the war where north and south Korean soldiers sung pansori to remember their family and
inspire other soldiers live and fight. After the Korean war, In 1964, National Intangible Culture
Property revived pansori to the modern period, to recognize the traditional Korean culture and
history to the South Koreans and other people in the world.
In the current period, pansori is still being used where pansori have become more modern
song rather than a story. Regardless of the modernization of Pansori, “Pandora remains one of
the most prominent genres among traditional stage arts” (Pansori epic chant) . The traditional
value of what Pansori remain the same .Pansori to tell the modern people the story of
ancient Korea culiture and histories. All the hardship that the Korean have expereniced from the
Joeson period to current period. The impact of Pansori affected the Koreans and other people of
the world where it showed people the history of the Koreans great accomplishments and
sufferings throughout the Korean history.
The oral communication is a very important communication that was used by the ancient
soceity. From the prehistoric period, the human kinds were able to pass on their traditions and
technologies to the future generation. Oral communication help the development of new
technologies and educational skills. Oral communication lead the creation of writing system,
verbal communcaiton, and other communcation skil. The history of Pansori lead the adoption of
new techiques and skills to modernize the Korean society to help the society to succeed.
