Why did the US get involved in WWII? There are several reasons: 1. A rise in European dictators (which we already discussed.) Who were they? 2. Germany invaded Poland. Poland did nothing to provoke Germany. 3. Japan bombed US at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii WRITE in SCRAPBOOK Let’s TALK… The Germans thought that the treaty that ended World War I was unfair. (Remember??)The goal of Germany was to avenge itself for this treaty by taking over Europe. They also believed that Germans were a superior people. Let’s TALK… The goal of the Japanese was to establish control of the Far East in order to assure the economic prosperity of the Japanese people. At first, the European leaders tried to avoid war and responded to the aggression of Hitler’s Germany with a policy of appeasement, giving in to his demands. However, when Germany invaded Poland (unprovoked), allies Britain and France declared war on Germany. Let’s TALK… Soon Germany defeated France and was bombing Great Britain. Germany also invaded the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.). The Congress of the United States passed laws that required President Roosevelt to stay neutral. Let’s WRITE… However President Roosevelt tried to help the British leader, Winston Churchill; the leader of the free French, Charles de Gaulle; and the leader of the Soviet Union, Josef Stalin, with supplies. Let’s TALK… After the Japanese bombing of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii President Roosevelt asked the United States Congress to declare war on Japan. Let’s TALK… Germany and Italy then declared war on the United States in order to support their ally, Japan. Let’s TALK… The United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union became known as the Allied Powers or the Allies. More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over Normandy in advance of the invasion. Six parachute regiments, with more than 13,000 men, also went ahead to cut railroad lines, blow up bridges, and seize landing fields. Gliders also brought in men, light artillery, jeeps, and small tanks. Some were used for cruel medical experiments. Arrested Jews all over the world. Mass murdered the Jews, known as the Holocaust. More than 12 million men, women, and children were killed. At least 6 million were JEWS.
