English 10A Teacher: Adam Schott 2013-2014 Course Description: The English IIA course consists of 34 lessons that build on the skills learned in previous English courses. Within the course, students develop skills in grammar, punctuation, word usage, spelling, and vocabulary. This course introduces students to communications skills, such as giving speeches, using visual aids, and workplace communications. Finally, students learn how to write and revise research papers, including how to evaluate and document sources in MLA. Grading Scale: A 95-100 A- 90-94 B+ 88-89 B 84-87 B- 80-83 C+ 78-79 C CD+ D DE 74-77 70-73 68-69 64-67 60-63 0-59 Grading Categories: In this class your grade will consist of the following: Posttest: 87.5% Review Test: 12.5% Course Objectives: Unit 1: Parts of Speech: CE 4.1.5 - Nouns and Pronouns- Students will learn several different kinds of nouns, pronouns and their antecedents, as well as various specific types of pronouns. Verbs- Students will learn to recognize action and linking verbs, to distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs, and recognize helping verbs and verb phrases. Adjectives and Adverbs- Students will learn to distinguish among the various forms of adjectives and adverbs and the functions they serve in sentences. Prepositions and Conjunctions- Students will learn to identify prepositions, prepositional phrases, and conjunctions in sentences. They will also make distinctions among prepositions, conjunctions, and adverbs in sentences. Unit 2: Phrases, Clauses, and Sentences: CE 1.1.6, 1.3.3, 4.1.1 - - Basic Sentence Parts- Students will learn about complete and simple subjects and predicates. They will learn to distinguish between objects and complements, identify subjects in sentences that give orders and directions, and identify subjects in sentences in which the subject order is inverted. Phrases- Students will learn adjective and adverb phrases, appositives and appositive phrases. They will also learn to identify participles, gerunds and infinitives, and learn to distinguish among their associated verbal phrases. - - Clauses- Students will learn about independent and subordinate clauses and the parallel structure of adjective, adverb, and noun clauses. They will also learn the different functions of relative adverbs and relative pronouns. Modifiers- Students will learn the three degrees of comparison of regular and irregular adjectives and adverbs. Students will also make logical comparisons using modifiers. Unit 3: Mechanics: CE 4.1.5 - - - Capitalization- Students will learn to use capital letters with first words, proper nouns, and adjectives with titles. Commas- Students will learn how to use commas in a number of different ways including with words, phrases, clauses, and essential and nonessential expressions. They will also examine how commas are used in text to clarify meaning. Semicolons and Colons- Students will learn how to use semicolons and colons in their writing, as well as a device for varying the style of writing and providing clarity of thought. Quotation Marks- Students will learn how to use quotation marks to become better writers. Dashes, Parentheses, and Hyphens- Students will learn how to use dashes, parentheses, and hyphens effectively in text. Apostrophes- Students will learn how to use apostrophes with the possessive form of nouns and pronouns, with contractions, and in certain other cases. Unit 4: Usage: CE 1.1.6, 1.3.3, 4.1.1, 4.1.5 - Verb Tense- Students will learn how to identify and use the four principal parts of verbs, and the various tenses of verbs, including how to conjugate the verb tense. Pronoun Case- Students will learn how to use pronouns in the nominative case, objective case, and possessive case. Subject-Verb Agreement- Students will learn how to use correct subject-verb agreement with singular and plural subjects, compound subjects, and with confusing subjects. Effective Sentences- Students will learn to combine sentences using compound subjects, verbs, and objects. They will also learn to combine sentences using clauses and phrases, and to revise sentences by varying sentence lengths and beginnings. Unit 5: Vocabulary and Spelling: CE 1.1.8, 2.1.3, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.1.5 - - Using Vocabulary in Text- Students will learn how to use context clues through the use of description, examples, restatement, and comparison and contrast to determine a words meaning. They will also learn about denotation, connotation, and common vocabulary usage errors. Prefixes- Students will learn the definition of five prefixes and how to apply their understanding of the prefixes to decipher complex vocabulary in sentences and phrases. Roots- Students will learn the definition of five roots in order to decipher complex vocabulary in sentences and phrases. Suffixes- Students will learn the definition of five suffixes in order to decipher complex vocabulary in sentences and phrases. - - Verbal Analogies- Students will learn that verbal analogies can be determined by understanding the relationship between the words which in turn can help them make connections between related words in analogies. Spelling- Students will learn techniques to improve spelling such as using a spelling notebook and memory aids. They will also learn to apply spelling rules to regular and irregular plural words as well as to prefixes and suffixes. Unit 6: Communication Skills: CE 1.1.3, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.6, 1.3.8, 1.3.9, 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.5.3, 1.5.4, 1.5.5, 2.1.4, 2.1.6, 2.1.7, 2.1.9, 2.1.11, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.3.3, 2.3.5, 3.2.4, 3.4.1, 3.4.3. 3.4.4, 4.1.3, 4.1.4, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.2.4 - - - Principles of Communication- Students will learn effective interpersonal and group communication skills as well as effective listening and conflict resolution strategies. Oral Presentations- Students will learn how to prepare and present an oral presentation as well as how to evaluate oral presentations for effectiveness of organization and message. Using Visual Aids and Multimedia- Students will learn how to interpret information in visual aids from print and nonprint sources for various purposes. They will also learn how to use media to enhance multimedia presentations and to produce a video. Workplace Skills- Students will learn how to participate effectively in interviews, use effective communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills in business situations, as well as how to set personal and professional goals. Functional Text- Students will learn how to read and write for everyday situations. They will practice reading information in graphs, charts, technical articles, product labels and following directions. They will also learn how to write letters to the editor. Unit 7: Research: CE1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.4, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.4, 1.4.6, 1.4.7, 2.1.6, 2.1.7, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.3.4 - - - - Using Sources- Students will learn the process of selecting a thesis statement for research and how to identify and use sources to gather information. They will also synthesize information from various sources to draw conclusions and refine the thesis. Credibility of Sources- Students will learn to identify, explain, and analyze source credibility, including selecting appropriate sources for a given topic, evaluating sources and authors for reliability or bias, and recognizing propaganda disinformation and censorship. Writing and Evaluating Research- Students will learn the process of writing and presenting research papers. Students will also evaluate information found in research by identifying components that make up effective research reports. Documentation- Students will learn and understand the importance of respecting intellectual property and preventing plagiarism.
