Negative Numbers Integers: a whole number Positive number: a number greater than zero Negative number: a number less than zero Less than < if a number is less than another it will sit to the left of the other number on the number line Greater than > if a number is greater than another it will sit to the right of the other number on the number line Addition and Subtraction of a Positive Integer When you add a positive integer, move to the right along the number line When you subtract a positive integer, move to the left along the number line Addition and Subtraction of a Negative Integer Adding a negative integer to another integer means you move to the left on the number line Subtracting a negative integer to another integer means you move to the right on the number line Examples 4 +3=7 2 – (-7) = 2 - - 7 = 2 + 7 = 9 - 3 + 1 = - 3 + 1 = - 2 - 5 – (-8) = - 5 - - 8 = - 5 + 8 = 3 Multiplication and Division with Negative Integers The product of two positive numbers is positive The product of a negative number and a positive number is a negative number The product of two negative numbers is a positive number The quotient of two positive numbers is positive The quotient of a negative number and a positive number is a negative number The quotient of two negative numbers is a positive number Examples -4 x 7 = -28 - 30 ÷ -5 = 6 - 54 ÷ 6 + 8 x – 9 ÷ - 4 = (- 54 ÷ 6) + (8 x – 9) ÷ - 4 = - 9 + - 72 ÷ -4 = - 9 + 18 =9
