Endocrinology
Definition
Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system, which is a system of glands, each of which secretes a type of hormone into the
bloodstream to regulate the body. Hormones regulate many functions of an organism, including mood, growth and development, tissue
function, and metabolism. Typical endocrine system glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, gonads
hypothalamus and pancreas.
Role of molecular imaging
Molecular imaging can be used to both diagnose and treat diseases of the endocrine glands.
 Iodine I-123 sodium iodide capsules help evaluate the thyroid for function and morphology.
 Iodine I-131 sodium iodide can be used diagnostically to measure the extent of radioactive iodide uptake to evaluate thyroid
function. It can also be used therapeutically to treat hyperthyroidism and thyroid carcinoma.
 Technetium-99m sodium pertechnetate can be used to image the thyroid and salivary glands in both adults and children.
 Thallium-201 chloride is useful to localize sites of parathyroid hyperactivity in patients with elevated serum calcium and
parathyroid hormone levels.
