China’s two most important rivers are the Yellow River in the north and the Yangtze River in the south. 2. A dynasty is when power was passed through a family for many generations, usually from fathers to sons or sometimes nephews. 3. The Shang Dynasty was one of the earliest dynasties. People believed the Shang Kings communicated directly with the gods and the ancestors. 4. Bronze bowls were created as a way to allow the Shang Kings to communicate with the gods. 5. Bronze bells were later created to entertain the ancestors with music. 6. The Shang Dynasty was the first to use writing to communicate with the gods and ancestors. The kings had their advisors scratch a question into an oracle bone, and then the bone was heated until it cracked. The advisor then analyzed the cracks to determine the answer to the king’s question. 7. For 200 years 7 different Chinese kingdoms fought each other to rule all of China. 8. Emperor Qin was the first man to unite all of China by taking control of all 7 kingdoms. He gave himself the name “The First Magnificent Emperor”. 9. Emperor Qin was able to get all of the people of China to work together. He made one kind of writing and money to help unify China. 10.Emperor Qin did not trust people and did not allow anyone to disagree with him. He burned books he did not like. 11.Emperor Qin started the building of the Great Wall of China. It stretched for nearly 4,000 miles along China’s northern border and was built in only 12 years. 12.Emperor Qin was such a powerful leader that he forced thousands of men to leave their families and travel hundreds of miles to help build the Great Wall. 13.The Great Wall helped to provide China with many centuries of peace from the nomads and other neighboring civilizations. 14.The New Han Dynasty was started by a peasant who only wanted the smartest and hardest working people to help him run his government. 15.To get a good job, it did not matter what family you can from, just if you were smart and how well you studied.
