Parts of Speech Week 1 Tom Stearns Hansung University English Through Movies 7 Parts of Speech Noun 명사 person, place, thing or idea Verb 동사 action, occurrence or state of being Adjective 형용사 describes a noun Adverb 부사 describes a verb or an adjective Preposition 전치사 attaches to a noun, shows relationship OR attaches to a verb as part of a verb phrase Conjunction 접속사 connects other parts of speech Interjection 감탄사 a word with no grammatical function Part of Speech VS Function Every word has a part of speech: Everyone I know walked in front of me. However, phrases can have different functions. Part of Speech VS Function Function 1: S P Everyone I know walked in front of me. In every sentence, a subject (noun) and a predicate (verb) are necessary. The subject is the acting agent of the sentence and any words that describe it. The predicate is the action and any words that describe it. Part of Speech VS Function Function 2: NVAA (Nouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs) Everyone I know walked in front of me. Adjectives describe nouns. Adverbs describe verbs. Functions What is the subject? What is the predicate? Some of the people want to leave. _____________________ _____________ SUBJECT PREDICATE Functions What is the subject? What is the predicate? Last night, twenty people signed up for the website. ___________ ______________ __________________________ PREDICATE SUBJECT PREDICATE Functions Separate the sentence into NVAA form. Some of the ________ people want to leave. ____________ _____________ ADJECTIVE NOUN VERB Functions What is the subject? What is the predicate? Last night, twenty up for the website. __________ ________________ __________ _______ people _______ signed ADVERB ADJECTIVE NOUN VERB ADVERB Questions to ask… Nouns: Who or what…? Verbs: What do they do…? Adjective: What kind, how many, which one…? Adverb: Where, when, why, how, to what extent…? Yesterday, ten of those crazy children ran quickly into the forest in order to catch bugs with their nets. Why is this important? When you are studying English, sometimes it is useful to learn vocabulary. Ex.) potato = 감자 But English contains so many phrases that have a different meaning than their vocabulary. You must be able to identify these phrases in order to understand the meaning. Ex.) The gray one washes me out. = ????
