• What are rabies?
• Symptoms of rabies ?
•
•
•
•
Rabies will cause the brain to swell in
patients who are infected by a bite from
an animal. More than 97% of all rabies
cases in the United States are caused by
dogs
The symptoms of rabies in humans
include irritability, headache, pain, itching
or a twitching at the infection site, and
fever.
As the disease progresses, muscle spasms
in the throat and respiratory tract affect
breathing, and the sufferer may have
difficulty swallowing, the combination of
which can produce the trademark
“foaming at the mouth”.
Further symptoms of rabies as it
progresses are hallucinations ,convulsions
seizures, paralysis, and eventually death.

• How to Prevent The Spread of Rabies
• Rabies is a preventable disease. Some suggestions for how
to prevent rabies include keeping your pet vaccinations
current, keeping your pets under direct supervision, calling
your local animal control agency to remove stray animals,
and avoiding direct contact with any unknown animals. If
you are traveling to a developing country in Africa, Asia, or
Latin America, it's particularly important to know how to
prevent rabies; the disease kills tens of thousands of people
each year in such countries.

• How can rabies be treated?
• Once you have been bitten by a rabid or
potentially rabid creature, you need to go to
your doctor. After they stop telling you that
you’re crazy, then you can remind them that
rabies is a pretty big deal and stuff. And you
like the whole idea of living. You will want to
talk to your doctor and tell them when you
were first exposed to the virus in order to give
them a time frame in which the treatment
should take place.
Heath Advisor / Doctor
• Do You Need Antibiotics or Another Type of Medication to
Treat Rabies
• Four formulations of three inactivated rabies virus vaccines are licensed
for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Two RIG
formulations are also FDA-licensed.
Although the four types of inactivated-rabies vaccines and the two RIGs
are the only rabies vaccines available in the United States, various other
rabies vaccines are produced throughout the world. Although inactivatedrabies vaccines from diploid cell cultures are safe and effective, they are
expensive. In developing countries, rabies vaccines often contain nerve
tissue which can cause adverse effects. Various less expensive but safe and
effective vaccines are under development.
