Prostate Cancer By: Jouya Najafi • Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that is malignant and that starts in the prostate What is it? • Since the beginning of 2017, about 26,000 deaths have occurred in the USA • 1 out of 7 men will be diagnosed with this type of cancer in the US • 1 out of 8 men will be diagnosed with this type of cancer in Canada Incident Rate? • Symptoms include pain and trouble urinating, blood in urine, and pelvic pain • Prognosis depends on the stage of the cancer. Early stages have good prognosis's while late stages do not Symptoms and Prognosis • The most known way of detecting prostate cancer is a DRE. A DRE is when a doctor inserts a finger into the rectum in search of any abnormalities of the prostate • Other detection methods are blood tests (a PSA test), ultrasound tests, and a prostate biopsy Detection • There are several ways to treat prostate cancer. Surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation treatment are all ways to treat it Treatment • There are several ways to prevent or reduce chances of prostate cancer. These include eating a diet that is low in fat, have a healthy weight, and exercise weekly. Tests can also be performed annually such as the DRE to prevent late stage cancer.
