2) So…in all these
revolutions we’ve
seen the idea of
“limited
monarchy”
supported and
sought after….
Let’s answer :
Topics Sheet # 18
But even with
this idea of
“limited
monarchy” in
the heads of
the French
people….
The social and
political disorder
of the French
Revolution, led
to_________?
And NOW…..for our next lesson…..
The Rise, Fall, Rise…and Fall
again….of Napoleon Bonaparte
http://www.history.com/topics/napoleon/videos/napoleon
Napoleon’s Background…
• In Military school
by 9; graduated by
16 and a lieutenant
in the artillery
• Revolution in 1789
led him to join the
army of the new
government put in
place …
The Rise of
Napoleon
1) Napoleon led the troops that crushed the rebellion against the Government
(Directory) of France in 1795 becoming a hero…
2) From 1795-1799 he was appointed to lead the French army against Austria,
who he crushed as well….
3) He also led an expedition to Egypt to disrupt Britain’s trade with India…it
didn’t work….his naval forces were defeated by the might of the British Royal
Navy…(he actually abandoned the troops and came home, supposedly)
...This allowed Britain, to France’s dismay, to maintain its power, control of
Egypt and of course, its control of the Suez Canal, which made movement of
people and goods easy for Britain and its colonies
(answer #22 on your Topics Sheet)
The cool and positive
outcome of this failed
attempt in Egypt?
During voyages in Egypt,
one of Napoleon’s
soldiers found The
Rosetta Stone.
• this helped in later
being able to translate
Egyptian Hieroglyphics
finally….as we have
already learned 
• In time, mixed in to
Napoleon’s military success,
came a lady….her name
was Josephine

Note: Even though he loved
her, she could not produce a
son for him….this would hurt
their relationship after he
takes control of France later…

By 1799…
Coup d’etat: Napoleon takes over
the Government
(Look at Topics Sheet # 13)
1) By 1799, Napoleon had
returned from Egypt, and with
urging… takes over the
government
…creates the Consulate - with
himself as First Consul (of 3). 
2) He soon took dictator powers
and continued to be General of
France as he road his troops in to
continue the fight with Britain,
Austria and Russia, who were
trying to take him from power…
….Peace agreements were
signed and by 1802
Europe was at peace for
the 1st time in 10 years
3) Now Napoleon could focus on
France
Assignment:
Now….as you learn about
Napoleon reign, I want you to
“grade” him as a leader for
France…
France had been through so much
already!
Would he “make the grade” as
their new leader?
(pass out Report Card)

Code Napoleon…..
• Code Napoleon: Napoleon then
created his Civil Code, a set of law,
which put many of the ideas of the
French Revolution into law.
• It sets the standards for equality
before the law of all citizens.
….put rules on property rights and
much more.
….He kept order in France and even
allowed for more equality in taxes,
one of the main things the 3rd estate
had wanted in the first place…
• Unlike Louie and Marie, he
continued to work on a
relationship with the people and
the church…all was good
….and the people of France seemed
happy
• In 1804, Napoleon
proclaimed himself
Emperor Napoleon I.
• The people of France,
happy with the stability
he had created,
supported this move
• He took the crown from
the pope during the
coronation and
crowned himself….
• From here his
ambitions to create a
vast French empire
started…
• He gave up fast on wanting
French Empire status in the
West, as rebellion occurred
in French colonies after the
French Revolution, and it
was very costly across the
Atlantic to try and keep
land and revolution at
bay…
• Knowing he could not
defend his North American
colonies, it was during this
time that he sold Louisiana
to the United States ….(The
Louisiana Purchase) to
fund his wars with Europe
• The US government
showed interest in the
territory, so Napoleon
knew it would bring great
money and allow him to
cut losses in the Americas…
• America originally wanted a deal of no more than 10mil
for New Orleans, but Napoleon offered the whole
Louisiana Territory for 15mil to get rid of it. This was an
offer they could not refuse being that they got the area
for 3 cents an acre and it would double the size of
America
• Napoleon also liked the it would give more power to
America, and further punish his British enemies…
He was also emperor of France and needed
an heir…Remember who he is married to?
Well….he will divorce her
***********************
And in 1810, he married the
daughter of the Austrian
Emperor, a diplomatic marriage
(to ally with Austria) that
produced an heir.
• Her name was Marie Louise,
Archduchess of Austria
…he had then married into the
German Royal family and they
had an heir whom would become
Napoleon II by the next year.
• So Napoleon had been
successful so far at…
1) taking control of France
2)…becoming the emperor
and having all control
3) He had fixed the financial
system with his national
bank and..
4) Set a new code of law for
his country bringing more
equality in political rights
and taxation, etc. for his
people
…so this leads us to adding
one more thing to Topics
Sheet #10
So….all seems well….The people of France are
happy….
…But would
Napoleon be
happy?
Would he be ok
with just having
control of France?

What can we
already tell about
Napoleon from
the end of the
video you just
saw?
This is definitely…is a major problem with Napoleon…
Remember…He had the utmost respect for what in history?
Well….he also has this inner desire to recreate Rome and
empire status for France and for himself
All of this would start leading to one bad move at a time…
…And to enemies…and to fatal mistakes
We will see what
happens…Monday
