Preface
This directory contains a listing of international and local databases. These databases
include statistics on selected Jamaican economic indicators, such as gross domestic
product, interest rates, trade, and exchange rates. The directory is designed to succinctly
offer a description of the databases, their location and how to access them.
The directory is designed to facilitate persons doing research at the University of the
West Indies (UWI). The aim is to assist them to easily locate statistical data on Jamaican
economic indicators. The information presented in the directory is based on a primary
investigation of the services offered by the databases. Some of the sources that are listed
in the directory are available in the UWI Mona Main Library. To find out about the
availability of these sources users can access the library’s online catalogue through the
main page of the library by way of the following link: http://mona.uwi.edu/library/ .

Library, statistical data can also be accessed by all graduate students and faculty members
from the library at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies
(SALISES). This is located in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The directory is divided into two main sections: international and national. The
international section list those databases that are maintained by international institutions
and the national databases are those which are maintained by institutions in Jamaica.
The reference section of this document provides a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet version
of this directory with more details. Specifically, the document contains direct links to
websites, a complete listing of the economic indicators provided by each database and a
listing of where to find the main indicators used by UWI economic researchers. 1 This
spreadsheet can also be accessed from the individual database descriptions.

Description:
This database provides aggregate balance of payments data for 170 countries and areas covering the
period 1948 to present. The online service allows users to download selected data sets in a spreadsheet
format. Data is also available through a CD-ROM subscription or through the purchase of printed copies
from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Direction of Trade Statistics
Description:
The Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) database provides data on countries trade patterns. It contains
data for over 190 countries and areas since 1948. The online service allows users to download selected
data sets in a spreadsheet format. Data is also available through a CD-ROM subscription, through the
purchase of the DOTS yearbook and the DOTS quarterly from the International Monetary Fund. Each
yearbook covers the last seven years of data and the quarterly covers the last six quarters.

Description:
The Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) provides primary data on Jamaica’s monetary position since the inception of
the institution in 1960 and beyond. The Bank regularly updates its datasets which are disseminated in
various publications issued on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. Statistics are also posted online in
spreadsheet format or as downloaded versions of the publications. The information can also be accessed
from the Bank by contacting its library. The main data publications are the Economics Statistics,

Statistical Institute of Jamaica
Description:
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica is the lead provider of statistical information in Jamaica.
STATIN publishes economic data on an annual, quarterly and monthly basis. The main data
publications are the Consumer Price Indices, Employment and Earnings 2004- 2005, External
Trade Report, Labour Force Statistics, Quarterly Gross Domestic Product and National Income
and Product. Data is also made available through the JAMSTATS CD-ROM. STATIN can
retrieve data from selected indicators from the 1950’s to the present.
