Standard Operation Manual of BISC Research Tanks Travis Leonard Travis Leonard Education Intern University of North Carolina Wilmington Marine Biology and Chemistry Tank Design Project Introduction 32 research tanks, divided into two separate systems Overflow system Tanks on the same system will share water parameters Donated by the BraderAraje and the Tom Bradshaw families Protein Skimmer Operation Tiny impeller chops incoming air bubbles into smaller sizes Air bubbles combine with organic material Water and clean air are recycled, waste is collected at top Essential Parameters Nitrogen Cycle Ideas Tropical Fish Setup Reef tanks Local fish species Marsh tanks Oysters Goals Repair protein skimmer devices for each side Create a highly specific but very simple operation and maintenance manual Stock tanks with local species to undergo study Progress Lowering salinity to livable levels Installing splash guards Combat the high amount of evaporation Finding best valve positions Keeping the tanks clean Importance Why is this manual important? This manual will allow any person to properly maintain the research tanks, no matter the intended research specimen Ideal parameters (and how to reach them) are given for any type of ecosystem desired in the tanks As a NPO, I feel that it is very important to utilize every resource given to us. Main points of Use Always use only one system for project, and use other side as a control Keep flow valves in current position for most even water flow Keep tanks clean of salt buildup (exponential growth) Allow one full Nitrogen cycle minimum between projects Looking to the Future Secondary protein skimmer installation Light installation Continued maintenance Possible water flow change Chiller installation Special Thanks Poul Lindegaard, Mentor Liam Batchelder, Volunteered help The Tom Bradshaw family The Brader-Araje family Questions?
